  • alternator relocation?

Well I'm about to pull my 3.4 out in my z today and was thinking about whether or not I could relocate the alternator. I bought the car with an idler pulley where the ac compressor is supposed to go so I'm thinking that if I could re route the cables I could maybe put the alternator in the front of the engine. That would make it go from a 5 hour job to change to a 10 minute job. Plus it would last longer because it would get all the cool air it wants from underneath. I also had another idea to relocate the coils, I'd like to get a smaller overflow jug and set the coils right on the strut tower, anyone have any ideas on any of these just let me know. Thanks guys

Mounts dont line up at all would need custom adapter plate.. Only takes 5 hours the first time iv seen it done on a 96 in an hour and a half. On my car with the 5 speed manual it takes less then 30min.

Coils you dont want to put soo close to the pcm. Smaller overflow makes it a lot better to work on the belts. Also relocating the windshield washer tank helps out.

Damn. I was hoping I could put it up front. I just did mine about a month ago and DAMN it was a pain in the ass. Then again I did mine the halfass way and just knocked the tie rod out instead of pulling the half shaft, and I ended up breaking the casing off the old one instead of getting that 10mm bolt out. Anyways, I'm pulling the motor tomorrow so I'm gonna see if I can make a bracket for it. Oh and I gotta agree that the washer tank and battery is one of the dumbest designs I've ever seen.

Silly yes, dumbest no. Helped the Bro inlaw swap motors in his Solara. It has the 3.0 L DOHC and is auto. Those ratards run the passenger side half shaft through the motor mount. What a pain in the ass. I was about 10 hammer blows away from beating the locating dowels off of the motor mount.

I'll change the altenator any day compared to workin on that thing.
