  • TDC cam oiling bulletin; discontinued; any info?

    Hi all;
    I have a GM bulletin for an oiling "fix" for the 91-93 TDC engine. It lists a kit that of course is discontinued. Has anyone seen this or better yet put together their own in any fashion? Tried something that DOESN'T work?

    Any input appreciated; Thanks

        Awesome; thanks! Guess I was looking for something saying CAM and not thinking about lifters. Big help.

          Very easy to do when the cam carrier is sitting on the workbench. I've done four of 'em (two engines) and I'll do two more when I replace the head gaskets on the '92 sometime this winter.

          Thrust plates are the only real problem area. I'm getting them surface-ground locally. The set-up charge is more than the actual grinding, so the more I have done at one time the less expensive it is per-piece.

          Of course, you could source new ones (depending on availability) or have yours ground locally.

            Thanks; I copied your article to WORD so I could print it off; hope you don't mind? You get the credit for sure; it is very helpful. I think I will take the plates into my m/c shop and get them ground; I would likely fall asleep trying to do it myself. We'll be doing two motors too so I'll get a few sets done. Wonder if there is any demand on the forum for them... I likely have (well I DO have) about 4 or 5 engines' worth...
            If the engine is sitting on the floor it should still be ok do you think? ie on the cradle? Could do it in conjunction with a timing belt replacement etc.
            Thanks again it is a big help.

              Get 'em all done at the same time. I wish I had that many. I'm still stuck doing about four (two engines) at a time; and the setup charge is killing me.

              As long as you have good access to the rectangular covers, you'll be fine. The front cam carrier has the lifting hook blocking the rectangular cover, and the rear cover is buried behind...everything...when in-the-vehicle.

              Perhaps I'm paranoid. Maybe I've lost my mind. After seeing the head gaskets on my '93 at 150K miles...If I was doing a timing belt anyway, and wanted the cam oiling modification, I would (which is to say "I will") pop both heads off and do the head gaskets, oil pump drive o-ring, alternator, and block heater at the same time. My '92 is coming apart this winter for that very procedure.

              Did you see the photos of my head gaskets in the other thread?

                We have a surface grinder here at the shop if you guys have cores to send us to grind. I should talk to Ben about it. I have been shaving down 3800 oil pump drive covers for a few years to clear their double rollers - much larger parts than those.
