  • timing belt change

I'm about to try to change the timing belt on my 92 Z34 and was pricing the parts. I noticed that all the kits available are saying Camshaft Tensioner Hydraulic Assembly is not included. Two part question- is it needed to be changed and where do I find it. The dealer is NO help, saying that parts aren't even inthe system anymore and local auto parts stores don't list em. I wanna do this right. That's my baby and she's been good to me so far, even though this job is waaaaayyyyyy past due.

The unit is oil-filled for lubrication. It is not "hydraulic". I re-use mine; but dump out the old oil and replace with Mobil 1 5W-30. Don't forget the two rubber plugs, one of which you puncture to use a piece of wire as a holding device once you retract the plunger.

Best price I've seen on timing belt kits is Amazon--Under $120.

      I reuse mine as well.

The only time I've replaced one is when the rear plug on it where you put the oil was missing and the thing was stiff and hard to turn. As long as that plug is in place and retracts easy when you reset it, and like Shurkey mentioned, change the oil in it and use synthetic you should be good to go without replacement.

thanks alot!!! I was starting to wonder if GM wanted these motors to just die away. I've seen quite a few threads on changing it. I'm gonna have a buddy of mine help me out. He's done them before but nothing recent. I also gotta replace my AC compressor. looks like when I get started I'll be down for at least a full day

I read in another thread how to set the timing for a few extra ponies. I can't seem to find them anywhere though. Can someone point me in the right direction? Also now that I have this all apart (timing belt) should I be checking or replacing anything else? She's been pretty good to me and I don't wanna keep put her through major surgery. One more thing. I also read that a different intake also adds a bit over stock. Was that from a 96 and up 3.4? What other mods are needed there? OBDI to OBDII right? is that a big deal?

Probably talking about the 6/6 timing split on the camshafts.

How deep do you want to go? Next time my '92 needs a timing belt, it's going to get a valve job, too. I've seen too many 3.4 cylinder heads with wiped-out exhaust valve faces. Intake valve faces seem durable, intake and exhaust seats seem durable...exhaust valves are crap.

My '93 had a head gasket puke coolant into one cylinder. When I removed the second head, the second gasket was about to fail, and in EXACTLY the same place. I don't trust the DOHC heads in that location. I think they've got a weak spot that loses clamping force, and then the gasket creeps. But since my sample size is "two" cylinder heads, that's not enough to make a definitive statement. All I know is that my other engine is coming apart as soon as it's convenient for me; so that I can get AHEAD of the valve and head gasket problems.

Might also want to consider the thrust-plate Service Bulletin modification unless it's already been done.

The 96 intakes do give better power, but it also moves the power band up 1k rpms, so I would only suggest it if you have a 5 speed. The 91-95 intakes pretty much pull to the auto red line if you do the modified cam timing.
