  • Repairing 3.4 DOHC need opinions

Hi all, currently repairing a 3.4 dohc, first thing: found a thread that cloyes timing chain set is not a good choice for replacement part but I already have it. Sealed power a best choice ? another brand ? oem ?

Second: harmonic balancer mark like 25* off the mark in cover. possible bad balancer ? can be used anyway ?

Third : cam timing is +6/-6 or +6.5/-6.5 ? or is 13* in crankshat making +6.5/-6.5 in each cam? or is 6* in crankshaft making it +3/-3 in each cam? How is the trick !

Fourth: at #1 TDC which carrier bank set first ??

    That's all for now.....

Does GM still sell the chain and tensioner? That would be the only way to go IMO if its possible. The pushrods have issues with chain stretch on the cloyes but the DOHC, I am not sure on.

Get a new balancer if its not the chain or some other issue throwing that timing mark off. The rubber may not be solid to the metal any more otherwise.

6/-6 and 13 degree exhaust retard are in crank degrees. The width of the timing mark is 1 degree, so you could make new marks if you wanted. Autos like advancing the intake 6 degrees and retarding the exhaust 6 degrees. Manuals can use the higher RPM better for 13 degree exhaust retard, stock intake. Idle is a bit rougher but I am happy with it in my car.

Doesn't matter which bank you set first as long as you set 1 bank, rotate the engine 360 degrees, and then do the other bank. I like to do the rear bank first.

Don't even use it. I wouldn't put a 3.4 DOHC into a W body. Get a pushrod, or get a 284 to go with the 3.4 DOHC and then kiss your MPG goodbye. I am not an advocate for this engine other than for racing applications.

Define like...well, its smoother idle than stock, and more power than stock. Power stops about 6k though, 6200 tops. Great powerband from 3-6 though.

i'll have to use it to scare old ladies then.

it's what i, and i imagine other people as well, have available. with only ~110K miles on it, seems like it would be a waste not to use it.

6K limit is no problem for me or anyone else running an auto, not like the 4T60E loves high RPM power to begin with.

My that's why I love it as an engine I would love to build a nasty turbo car one day or a rail car.

Cloyes timing set. Things are getting a little infernal hard. The tension in the timing chain, can't even fit it in place. (pic)Click image for larger version
