I made the cam gear holder tool using platr of steel, drilling out holes for 15mm socket, and for grade 8, 2 inch long bolts that catch the gear. These cam gear bolts will not budge. I've almost stripped the front bolt! Is it absolutely necessary to loosen cam gears to replace a slipped timing belt? Or can I just use the crankshaft dampener notch, then bolt on cam flat holding tool, place new belt and pulleys, then rotate engine fron crankshaft?

To do it to make it 100% spot on and do it by the book they have to come out, but if you can't get em out, move on and get it as close a you can without removing the gears and it should run ok as long as the marks seen too far off (which they shouldn't be if it was running when it died).

Think I screwed up. Since I couldn't get cam gear bolts out and I set Both the cam flats face up, when I rotate crank with new belt, pullies, and actuator installed, the flats are both still face up after 360°rotation. I'm guessing this is why the front cam gears need to be lose so the front bank stays in place while rear is timed? What do I do now?

Little drunk cant falow you. One set of the cam flats should be up and the other bank down at TDC with the belt tight.

I had trouble with one of mine too. Like they said, it will likely take an impact wrench to break it free.

Drunk agian... Yeah I had to use and impact on all 4 cams with a good impact socket. If you cant you have to go with pocket rocke and just make shure the timing cam flats are perfect at tdc.
