  • Home made Timing Belt tools for 95 z34

So working on timing belt for a 95 monte z34. I have found schematics for the DIY key stock cam flat holding tool, and I am having a machine shop make my cam flat tool. Anyone out there have schematics for adjustable cam flat tools so I can do -6/+6 timming, and any schematics on the cam gear holding tool? Thanks to everyone here who shares their advice and success stories that help so many of us DIYers.

In the absence of other replies... here is a target specific forum with an older discussion of your topic and your vehicle as well. If you are not already a member there. it might be worth your while to join them and revive this discussion, too. The responders seem to have a cautionary tale connected with timing-power related issues that deserve further exploration. As with any interference engine, messing around with the advance-retard configurations to attain more power can become a long road with no turns in it. But... they seem helpful and friendly there, too...so good luck with your tool designs and with the performance gains you seek:

Engine/Transmission/Performance Adders - '95 Z34 Timing Belt Question - Hello All! Our new '95 Z34 (101K miles) has a timing belt that I don't know when it was changed last. Does anyone know the best brand to use? Gates? Dayco? Should I get the timing belt kit that's advertised? Do the tensioner and pulley need to be...

No one has good schematics for adjustment. You would be better off making new marks on your crank dampener to show 6 degrees both ways and then line those up to the stock mark. This isn't too difficult as the stock notch is the exact width of 1 degree.

Cool, thanks for the info. I am a member of montecarloforum and have been researching there also. I just made the cam flat tools, and will probably stick with the stock timing since this is my first timing belt job. I have about 160k on this belt, never been replaced and cam covers, timing covers along with timing chamber full of belt dust. Yaay! I've been reading that some people suggest using cam gear holder and some say there's no need. Any thoughts on using or not using cam gear holding tool? Thanks

I like having the cam gear holder to break the bolts loose. You might get away with vise grips between the gears to hold them in place.

The DOHC is interference? Some years it doesn't matter if the belt breaks, not sure about all of them.

It's not designed as one, but the real question is what RPM did the belt let go. If it's high RPM there is a chance of valve damage, if at low RPM, I doubt any of them will have valve/piston contact.

yeah, I'm worried about valve damage. Was going bout 65mph on freeway, rpm was around 2300/2500, went to give a little acceleration and realized I had no response. No real way to know without pulling head is there? besides putting new timing kit in and firing her up and pray? So I have the gates kit, valve cover gaskets, etc. on order from rockauto. Have everything apart and cleaned, flats up ready for the install. Still don't know how I'm going to remove the cam sprokets? Tried the vise grips to test it, but the cam sproks moved a little. So if anyone is close to new bern, NC this weekend with cam gear holder/puller and wants to make some cash hit me up. Thanks everyone

Sorry I didn't answer your PM.. Just read it now, didn't get an e-mail as I usually do... Gotta check my settings I guess...
Here's a link to a thread with pics and dimensions on the adjustable tool... Any decent machinist should be able to figure out how to reproduce it....

Also on the cam sprocket holders there are pics on the site of a home made tool that will work... I'll dig up a link to a thread about that in a while...
                  Hope this helps,,,,

I wouldn't worry about valve damage at that RPM to be honest. Personally if it were mine and it happened like that I would throw a belt at it and fire it up

When I said high RPM, I mean like 5k+.

Sweet, thanks you all rock. I'm sure everyone is tired of the discussion.lol. I really appreciate everyones help here. Yeah boieee, ready for this weekend! Secretly I like working on this engine! I think its the satisfaction of hearing mechanics tell "joe blow" that its such a difficult job to do, and then find out the tools are ridiculous expensive.lol, then you can fabricate them pennies to the dollar! What a great satisfaction!!
