I swapped a '95 LQ1 into my '92 during its restoration, but I didn't take the oil cooler off my old '92 motor. I wish I had, because I keep wearing out my oil prematurely and getting the tapping noise from the valvetrain after barely 2000 miles. I tried going to synthetic 5W-30 but that only bought me 5000 miles. Checked RockAuto but they only have an oil cooler for the 4sp auto, not the 5sp manual. Does anyone here have one laying around?

LQ1 5sp oil cooler?

I don't recall the oil cooler being special for the 5 speed. It was just a coolant cooled oil cooler that the oil filter bolted too. Then there is the piece on the timing chain cover that has the hose setup to send the coolant to the cooler. Been a while since I messed with a 91-93 3.4 DOHC.Ben

I was thinking along the same lines- I didn't think there was anything special about the 5 speed cooler over the auto, but I wasn't certain, which is why I didn't post up sooner. I mean, the block, starter and front exhaust manifolds are the same as an auto with the exception of air injection ports in the top of the 5 speed manis, but those are on top and wouldn't interfere with the cooler.-60v6's 2nd Jon M.

Okay, I didn't know the auto even had an oil cooler, I was assuming that the RockAuto part was an auto trans fluid cooler not an engine oil cooler. As Ben pointed out there's the timing cover piece too, and since I have the '95 timing cover now, would it even work with that?

Anyone got a pic of the coolant line setup to the oil cooler, or even just the cooler itself? I remember it fit inline on the oil filter, but it's been five years...

I'll snap one tomorrow. It won't be the best quality thanks to someone doing a number on my digicam, but the camera on my phone will get the point across. The phone is on the charger right now.-60v6's 2nd Jon M.

I took the pics, but I can't find my cable right away, and my phone does not have service, so I can't send them to anyone. I can say the one hose comes from an adapter on the water pump housing where the lower radiator hose and the metal pipe that runs around the front of the engine connect. The other hose connects to the block to a nipple between the oil filter hook up and the ICM mount. If I had to guess, this hole would normally be populated by a drain plug. Actually I ran out to the shed and checked my spare bare block. It is populated by a plug.-60v6's 2nd Jon M.

Thanks Jon, I could visualize most of that but I'm still looking forward to seeing your pics. I know this has to be the reason for my noisy lifters when the oil gets hot and thins out, so I'm intent on adapting that part. I got a new ACDelco on wholesaler closeout that should be here shortly. The input should be fairly easy - it's the output that could be tricky.

No problem
I will add that both hoses look like molded 1/2 ID hose. The one from the block to the cooler makes 2 90 degree turns, the one from the water pump adapter has 1 90 degree turn out of the cooler and has a slight bend towards the top that doesn't have to be molded because it's too slight to worry about. Hopefully I find the cable when I go back in the house later tonight.-60v6's 2nd Jon M.

Unless you live with a clean freak for a wife, you've no idea how hard it can be to find stuff in this house. When something is "out of place" because it isn't where she wants it, it gets moved. Where does it get moved? It doesn't matter as long as it isn't out or not where it's supposed to be now. Even when I tell her not to touch a thing in my man cave, no matter how much I threaten to beat her. Ok, I really don't threaten to beat her, but I DO tell her to STAY OUT of my man cave and don't touch anything. If thoughts of beating her do come about, I usually head out to the garage. As for the cable, I still cannot find it. It's not like it's a normal mini-USB either. It's a proprietary plug on a Sony-Ericsson phone, and I don't have a Memory Stick slot in my pc.
Edit: I've also been unable to find a clear pic of that area of the engine on google...Last edited by pocket-rocket; 08-05-2011, 04:18 PM.-60v6's 2nd Jon M.

Yeah, nobody ever takes a pic of that area, I looked too. The only shots I have are of it on a stand.
