  • Band Clamp Dilema

i got my motor back in and everything hooked up. 2 things holding me back besides $$$. 1 being a new rad and 2 are the metal bands that hold the cv boots on. i know some of u guys have went through this be4.

i went to advance and the biggest thing they had was this puny clamp that looked like it went to a civic. i called a chevy dealership and they said boot kit only $50 ea. i don't need a stinking boot i need the 2 large clamps that hold them on.

any1 have a pn or does a certain part store carry something that might fit my car?

Man this probably sounds ghetto but I clamped my mother in laws back in with a couple of industial style plastic wire ties(commonly refered too as zip ties). I think its got like twenty thousand on it and it hasnt flung any grease out yet as of the last oil change.

If you get the Zip Tie tool, this is a perfect fix! Even MOOG says so. ( I went to school there )

Did the heavy duty Zip-Tie thing on one of my tie rod boots, worked just fine. Another good thing to try would be a large diameter stainless steel hose clamp. Those fucking clamps they give you are the hardest shit to install anyway.

i found some band clamps that are close to the same size. if i get too frustrated trying to put them on i might consider other options. I want to see a pic of this zip tie job be4 i even consider it.

on another note don't u need some kind of pliers or something to do the band clamp install?

Yeah, they look funny. Kinda like diagonal side cutters (wire cutters without the stripper part), but instead of the cutting part going in the same direction as the handles, it is turned 90*. We use them at work to put new crimp fittings on air lines instead of taking our hoses all the way to the tool crib. Large hose clamps would work, but I think it would throw the axle out of balance some. Not alot, but some. These are the type of cutters I am talking about:

Your power tool and industrial equipment superstore, carrying top brands including Dewalt, Milwaukee, Greenlee, Ridgid, and many more

Klein are expensive tools, they are kinda like the Craftsman of electrical hand tools, so you won't need an expensive pair to do this one time deal.

Are craftsman expensive in the states? Cause here they are the cheapest high quality tool you can buy. They are actually seen to be tools that are only used by "backyard mechanics". I however disagee, because I use them. The tools that are considered to be "high-end" are Mac or Snap On. If you are an electritian then Klien are the best. But the "Craftsman - Snap On" debate is junk to me. Because Craftsman are just as good at a fraction of the cost with the same warranty. As far as I'm concerned they have a better warranty, because they don't care where you work. The guys who had Mac tools that worked at Optimax with me, couldn't get warranty on their tools because it was a "production" shop. Shit I'd take a busted socket (3/8" drive, non-impact) back to Sears because I had pounded it on a red-hot rounded bolt, then used it on an 1/2" impact with a 3/8" drive reducer. They wouldn't say boo to me about how it broke, they would just give me a new one with a smile.

Yeah, same way here. Snap-on and Mac are way more expensive then Craftsman, but I still buy Craftsman any day of the week, and twice on Sunday. I think I am on my 2nd or 3rd 1/2" 2 foot breakerbar/wratchet with tilting head because I put a pipe on it to get way better leverage to break axle nuts loose. Ended up breaking the drive right off of the wratchet, lol. Even the 1/4" stuff (pretty damn tuff for 1/4 drive), they don't say jack about exchanging. All I have to say is Sears rules, and I will continue to buy tools there for a good long while. Then exchanging them for the rest of my days, lol.

I buy craftsman to. When I can. Sears aint open all the time and the mac and snap on guys can get bitchy with you sometimes. Then I go to ace hardware and buy 15mm 1/2 drive socket. Then I round off a cam sprocket bolt. nearest sprocket bolt is in Murry Ky. 3 hours away. You can actually throw an ace hardware socket into low earth orbit. If you really want those metal bands back on there try using a regular pair of dykes. Just dont squeeze to hard!
