  • Ignition Coil Relocation

Car is a 1992 Pontiac Grand Prix that had a 3.1L that was swapped to a 1994 3.4L DOHC, before the swap i was having to swap out coils alot, just to be on the safe side I would like to relocate the coils on the 3.4L if anyone has any pics of a lets say 91-95 that's had the coils relocated would u mind posting pics so i can have something to go on?

I'm trying to figure out where the best spot to relocate the coils would be, and pics would help tons

EDIT: Was messing around with a 3.1L bracket and came up with something like this

think having them set like this would be alright?

You may want to fasten them really sturdy like if you put them there. I wouldn't do anything where the mount can flex/bounce/bend or you will be fatiguing wires. Also, I've read ICMs don't like a lot of vibrations so anything that makes them bounce around more than what they would be subject to in a stock location would be bad. I'm with you though, the stock location on the early DOHC (and on gen2s) sucks, period.

yeah i was using just the little predrilled 10mm hole for a test just to see how it fit on there and it jiggled some, but since then i drilled it out, stuck a bolt and a nut on it, and tightened it all down nice and tight. Seems pretty sturdy just sitting there. I did start the car and let it sit there and idle for a bit and seems pretty good. just need to get it wired and everything ran good.

what would be the best way to go around routing the crank sensor i remember being told before that it can NOT be cut and soldered back and it would mess with the wires resistance or something along that nature since it was twisted together.

Probably around the rear of the engine and up the passenger side fender well behind that little plastic cover that helps hold the wires off of the acc. belt. I've been told if you absolutely have to add on to the CPS wire, use another one and solder them together and maintain the minimum amount of twists per inch in the wire. The twists help reject noise, just like in CAT5 (ethernet), or network wire.

Thats what i was thinking i gave joining 2 crank wiring harnesses together and still didnt have the proper length so i ended up extending the wires with some wire i had around and putting the twists in myself. after figuring out i had crossed 2 coils the car started up and idled better then it did before relocating the coils. thanks again.

I'll grab some pics tomarrow for anyone interested in doing the relocation themself after i get things ran and tucked away.
