Question : Have you ever replaced FuelPump/Sending Unit

I have a 1994 Lumina Z34 that i am trying to replace FuelPump/Sending Unit and cannot figure out how to drop tank, as bolts on rear of Tank Straps look Imposible to get to. Have never done this before and could use some Ideas...Anyone that may be able to give me some tricks of the trade, or help/ideas with this would be much appreciated...Sorry if this is not the right place/forum to ask this question but did not know where else to ask...Thanks, Paul

Should be just 2 bolts Look in the front, IIRC they are easy to remove, the back bolts are covered by the rear sub frame/suspension. zip them out, the tank drops (good idea to have a Jack under it so it doesn't drop. once its out then you have 2 lines to undo (Fuel return and feed) then the Sending unit is held in the top of the tank by a metal ring that needs to be tapped back untill the tabs line up with the slots and it pops out. you do have a Filler hose and a smaller hose to unhook as well.

here is a diagram (i usually only undo 2 bolts.. Fronts i think)




your fuel lines should be rubber lines and give you some room to move the tank around do you may not need to undo them (ive done it both ways) the earlier W bodies had hard lines that needed to come off.

BTW, if the sender is good, you can just replace the pump itself... MUCH cheaper.

ALSO much easier to do if the tank is empty.... there is a screen to keep Shyt out of the take if you try to suck it out the gas fil... you have to remove one of the hoses on the side of the tank to siphon the fuel out before you drop it..

Thank you RedZMonte for that Very Important info!...I just could not for the life of me figure out how i was going to get to the rear strap bolts...If you say i can just remove the front 2 bolts, and is enough to slide tank forward & out (after removing all lines & hoses) that seems more realistic than what other people say on other clubs/net. and even book/manuals on car. I will give it a try in the morning as i got parts in yesterday (sender/pump/ screen etc. all in one kit) for about the price of just the pump. I thought i was getting good one Spectra Premium $81.79 from Rock Auto, but the damm thing has Made in China sticker on it! Shit, is anything made with Quality in the US anymore? But car has over 200,000 mi. on it so will just haft to do... Thanks again, Paul

I tried to warn you...

You buy any decent brand of fuel pump and everything is included except the screen/sock prefilter. Be VERY CAREFUL because many fuel pumps are now sourced from China; and you don't want a junk pump because they're so difficult to replace.

BEFORE you drop the tank, find the wiring harness and do the electrical tests.

Well ,i asked Rock Auto if it was a good Quality pump and they said yes...I guess i should have investigated it better. But i could not afford the alternative one as it was over $200.00 This country needs to stop buying from China, even if just for a little while so we can start making things again and produce jobs and products w/quality, but i guess that will never happen since they pretty much own us at this point. I read that the interest alone that we pay on debts from borrowing from China is more than they spend on their Military,...Scarry
