  • Oiling Scheme Improvement Package (substitute?)

hi all; back at this after a rather long break....
i am going ahead finally with the next phase of my TDC swap-in for my project car.
I got another 3.4 and 284 package just for spares etc and got a service bulletin with it that addresses cold lifter tick (it says).

It shows how to install a service/repair kit; PN 12538687 that apparently is discontinued and not avail at warehouses etc.
Does anyone have alternate sources, suppliers or ideas on where to get this? it looks like a good idea and may help with the low oil pressure that seems so prevalent in these engines. Applies to 91 -94 and some 95's.
    Any input appreciated.
    Thanks in advance

One of these days I'll post the whole TSB.

Both of my 3.4s knock like mad. The local Chevy dealer told me about this "fix" many years ago, but wouldn't install it under warranty; and in fact attempted to cheat me by padding the labor time by two additional hours. I did not have the work done; but I should have ordered the parts.

(Truthfully, I thought even then that the problem was piston slap--and we know how allergic GM is to admitting piston slap is a common problem) In the years since, the knock has gotten worse, but the engine still doesn't burn oil, runs fine, etc...so what do I know?

First Guess: if you can buy the newer thrust plates (if still available) and then bought cup plugs, set screws, gaskets and such, you could duplicate the "kit" with mostly generic parts and OEM replacement stuff.

i got the service bulletin with all the info and yes, most of it could be figured out; even the cup plugs with some experimentation. Curiously it says 91-93 and then lists 'certain' engines (up to a certain VIN) in 95, so not just any cams will do; you would want to know the VIN of the car they came out of.
The biggie here is the main thrust washer; the replacement one in the kit is thinner and i can't see why it would be. nothing else done in this upgrade should affect that, that i can see.
thx for the input; i may have a look at doing this on a spare head/engine; see if the regular thrust plate can simply go back in.

First Guess: The thrust plate included in the "kit" is exactly the same one used in the later production engines. If the plate is still available, you could easily compare to an earlier plate and see the difference(s).
