  • gathering parts & making plans for my cutlass conv

I'm in the process of gathering parts for the timing belt and want to be sure that I'll get everything I need and would also like to look at improving the performance while in there. I will be borrowing my dad's garage to do this as it is winter and don't want to take as little time as possible while in there.
    My checklist includes:
    Timing Belt
Component Kit (camshaft belt tensioner and 2 camshaft belt idlers)
    Hold-down tools
    Intake gaskets
    Water Pump

    My questions are:
    1. Should the bolts for the pullies be replaced as well? I see them listed on the sticky.
    2. Should I replace the actuator? That is also listed on the sticky, but rarely see it replaced in forum posts.
    3. What options do I have to improve performance while in there? (cams, timing, etc.)

My car is a 95 cutlass convertible with just under 120k on the clock. The guy I bought it from got it from the original owner and I'm 99% certain that almost everything was original when I got the car at the beginning of this previous summer. It has high start-up idle or stall issues at times, so I'll be replacing the intake gaskets while I'm into the motor. Probably wouldn't be a bad idea to replace the water pump while I'm down in there as well.. If anyone can see anything I'm missing, please feel free to let me know. This will be my first 3.4L DOHC that I've messed with, but I do have experience with pushrod 60*s.
I usually deal with Carquest and sometimes autozone on parts, but I may buy some of this stuff through rock auto. Are there any brand names I should avoid?

What is my best bet for cam tools if I plan on keeping the car and/or am going to end up doing more than one vehicle/belt?

Check ebay for the Kent-Moore tool kit if you are going to keep the car a while/do more than just your DOHC. Also, it would be a wise move to get an actuator in case yours is like mine was in the 91- sans a rear plug. They can be reused, but sometimes you see where previous mechanics never replaced that rear plug and didn't know you were supposed to fill it with fresh synthetic oil before replacing said plug. I wouldn't bother with replacing the bolts unless you start rounding/stripping them.

That's the kit (plus the diagnostic plate for running it without the plenum on it- the big thing on the left), but normally they come in a nice plastic blow molded case. It's not just 1 part number for each kit, it's more like 1 part number for each piece.

From what I can see it looks totally complete. Most kits don't even come with the diagnostic plate. Heck, it looks more complete than my kit

well, I missed out on that tool kit but am currently checking into a couple others. How expensive are cams for these motors? Anyone have any sound clips or vids of different cams?

100% Custom... not somthing that has been done to my knoloedge by anyone here... I have heard of a couple guys running 4 exhaust cams successfully.... (replacing stock intake cam with a stock exhaust cam). other guys do timing adjustments (+6/-6 or +13/-13)... ported heads and a valve job would your best bet for gains without getting to crazy custom with cams.. im sure someone can get you some good cam specs and you can call comp cams or crain cams ect and price them..

Now don't quote me on this,,, BUT,,, I THINK someone on here has had custom cams made and the company that did them has all the specs for making more.. They aren't listed but, if you know enough to ask they will do it... With that said, I have NO clue who it was, a DEEP site search might turn something up.. I believe it was one of the bigger cam companies, like maybe Crane??? One thing I DO remember,, it was EXPENSIVE!!! Remember you have 4 of those lumpy sticks!!
                    Hope this helps,,,
                    Tom....
When you search make sure you go WAY back... This was a number of years ago...
Also, the 6 and 6 timing, on an automatic, gets RAVE reviews... I've got an adjustable cam-tool and will be doing this to my car in the future...

alright, thanks.. just wondered what options were readily available. I'll prob just look at adjusting the timing on them instead when I do the belt.
