  • Hard to start 3.4 when cold, had fuel problems

    1994 GTP, 3.4 engine.
So for the past few days it was a PITA to start cold. If you shut it off and restarted it was fine.
Last night the fuel regulator went bad and engine sucked a bunch of gasoline into the intake. Car would not start at all. I drained that and replaced the F.P.R. It was really old and I know they can wear out.

Well today after replacing it, I let the engine run for about 10 minutes, then took it out on the highway to "blow out" whatever gasoline might still be lingering in the system.
It ran pretty rough for a minute or two, probably on count of all the excess gas in the intake system.

OK so now, I still have the hard start problem, but not quite as bad as before.

When it had the CEL on, the codes were EGR related. Disassembled and cleaned it up.
The battery is good as is the charging system.
The fuel pressure reads 40 PSI key on engine off.
Spark plugs don't seem to be abnormally bad. They were replaced a couple thousand miles ago.

Once the engine is running, it does fine.

So if the fuel pressure is up to par, the regulator is brand new, and the injector resistances all read normal (12.3 ohms), the vacuum at the manifold for the FPR seems OK, and the fuel pump is working, I can hear it upon initial key, runs a few seconds and stops until engine on.

Basically I am not sure where to go next, I don't know if the REAL problem may have caused the FPR to go bad, like if that was the cause or the result of the problem.

I understand leaking injectors would be a possibility, but how would I check this?
If it is hard to start cold but then runs just fine once running, does that necessarily mean fuel system issue?

Even if the fuel had a drainback problem, it would still start within 10 seconds of cranking if the fuel pump output is anywhere within 10% of optimal. How is the hot restart? A leaky injector should light one of the fuel/air trouble codes and be a persistant misfire on start that goes away shortly when driving. What about minimum idle air rate? Is the throttle clean and properly adjusted? Have you checked the fuel filter for obstruction? More . . . more . . . we want to know more . . .

If you ain't rock and roll, you must be driving a Honda

      Seems things are getting better.
Today I went ahead and cleaned out the TB and the spark plugs.

I guess part of it was gas contanimation.

      Nov 30 update -
No further problems to report for fuel systems. Car seems to start fine most of the time, even in this crappy freezing cold.
