  • Ignition Module Grease?

What kind of grease goes under the ignition module? Dielectric tune-up grease (the kind you put inside the spark plug boot, or some other kind of grease, like white lithium or engine assembly lube? (yes, I'm being serious.) Also, on my 3.4 there is a metal plate between my engine block and the actual module, same size as the module. My buddy's 3.1 didn't have one. Is that some kind of heat sink or something?

I got one from the J/Y and didn't use any grease of any kind, now when it's damp outside, I get an arcing noise coming from the direction of the coil packs.

    thanks...

When I changed my module, coils, and wires, I swithed 2 wires, and they arched really bad. Maybe that is it. But I didn't use any grease, and with them hooked up right it is still running fine. And this was a long time ago too, about the same time my knock sensor went out.

I would probably use dielectric grease (spark plug grease) that way if some water happens to get splashed in there be it from a mud puddle or washing the car, those connections don't go bad from corrosion.

Isn't the plate between the coils and the block the ICM?

sorry...I didn't specify in my first post...there is a thin metal plate between the ICM and the engine block...

That should be the mounting bracket you are talking about.

I feel like a real dumb-ass...I hadn't taken the ICM off in a while...I took it off last weekend...the plate I was referring to is actually between the coil packs and the ICM...I covers the entire ICM and it has holes stamped in it where the coil packs connect to the ICM.

Ah, I have yet to take my coils off of my ICM.

Thanks, pocket-rocket... I used dielectric grease on my ICM and at the coil connection points. It rained pretty heavy here, just a day or two ago. No more pop, pop sound.

Kick ass! Glad it got fixed. You might want to run some GM Top Engine Cleaner through it now to get rid of the carbon buildup. There use to be a link to it. But anyways if you want to do it, go to a dealer and get the top engine cleaner (the liquid, not spray), warm the car up outside in a well ventilated area, find a vacuum line with good vacuum (I use the PCV hose) stick the line in the can. The car will try to die, but you have to keep it running by having someone keep it running, or using the TB right by where you will be at in the engine bay. Right before the can is empty (do not let the hose come out or no cleaning will happen), let the car stall. Let it sit for about 10-15 minutes, and start it. It will have a rough time starting, but it will fire back up. It will also smoke like a bitch. Now I don't remember if you jump in the car right away and take off, or if you leave it idle for a few minutes, but anyways when you do take it down the road, vary the throttle when you drive, and enjoy your newly installed Batman smoke screen, lol

Dielectric grease works on a lot of applications. Works great on battery posts, trailer light hook-ups, on light bulbs (not on the glass) and their connections, under ignition modules, plug wire connections, anyplace electric can meet air and moisture. (This sounds like an infomercial) And it can take out that annoying sound your wife makes when you buy new tools!

Please don't tell my wife I said that! Explanation: When you use Dielectric grease on an Electric chair, the current flows smoothly and... Damn!! I did it again!! I need my car back! Hopefully real soon! Really though. The stuff works.

Cool...thanks for the tip on GM top engine cleaner... I used some throttle body cleaner on the butterfly plate and just inside the throat, but I'm sure that was just the tip of the iceburg. I'll have to get some top engine cleaner from Chevy and really smoke up my neighborhood!
