  • Timing....Help!

I have a 93 Lumina Z-34 with the 3.4 in it and my timing belt broke awhile back.

Ok, Im not sure if ill make sense or not, so if i dont please tell me and ill try to make more sense. My cars timing belt broke and a shop here in town that my dads buddy owns is doing the work for us. They bought the special cam tools from GM and a book from GM about the engine, but they are not sure how to put it back together.

While they have it apart they are going to change the timing chain too and they were said that all the links were the same but one, and they were wondering if that had to go in a certin position or if it was just a master link?

Is there any easy way of getting this thing back together and timed right?
he was asking me too put all kinds of stuff on here and im not really sure what all he said but i think he asked What to do after you put the cam tools on there?

And do you line up the timing gears some how?

Im sure i missed some stuff so ill probably be back with more, but if anyone can help and understand what im trying to say, Thanks

Replacing the timing chain was probably overkill in your situation. Have you read the two pages on the site about timing the motor correctly? If not, I highly suggest it.

there are 2 pages, and they should help out alot in this situation. Seems wierd that a shop doesnt know how to put the motor back together. Then again, this is the LQ1

You would think. But then again most places that do the timing belts (if it isn't a dealer) like to use the paint marks on the cam gears. If at any time the belt has been done correctly, these marks don't mean jack.

Man, shops here in Edmonton are bastards. There are countless private outfits that turn away any and all LQ1's. Not to mention, there is a GM dealership here that sends there LQ1 timing jobs to my brother-in-law's shop. How fucked is that?!

To time this engine, which cams need to be turned down, Exhaust or Intake? And which cams are those?

turned down? The cams closest to the middle are intakes, and the ones closest to the exhaust manifolds are exhaust. on pair will have the flats face up while the other pair are 180 degrees of that facing down.

Like wont one of the cams have to turn clockwise and the other counter clockwise? I think is what he is trying to say, i dunno im just posting what my dad asks me too...

No, all cams turn in the same direction. Start with all cam flats in the up position, with the bolts loose. Think of the cams in banks. With the #1 cylinder @ TDC lock the flats on the same bank in the up position. Tighten the bolts to that set. Now remove the hold down too and lock down the other set. Now rotate the engine 180 degrees then tighten the remaining bolts. Remove the hold down tools and you are done.

That's wrong actually... you rotate the crank 360* because the cams spin HALF as much as the crank.

The easiest way to do it is: Line up the timing marks on the damper, lock the rear cams, remove hold down tool, rotate crank 360* (with the front cams still locked in place), then lock the front cams, and remove the hold down tool.

Oh, shit sorry. What he said, rotate the engine 360 degrees and the cams 180. I actually typed in 360 then changed it to 180.

The newest mod, 1 bank 180* retarded, lol. Just don't do all cams up, and have a double 3 cylinder, lol. It runs rough, sounds like shit like a colapsed lifter or 4, but it does have decent torque, lol. In other words, don't work your ass off all day and then stay up till 1am doing your timing belt, lol.

how would you rotate the engine if the one set of cams is locked down?
