  • Mysterious vaccuum line - 1996 GTP

I have P0410 coming up on my car (air pump). It's covered by factory recall, but the local GM dealer says they don't do recall/warranty work on Pontiacs (maybe they just don't want to tell me flat out that they hate working on the LQ1).

I'm thinking my problem might have something to do with this.

Sorry it's kinda hard to get a pic in here. It comes off the bottom/back side of the purge vaccuum switch, and it could swing either way. Might be pointed the wrong way right now.

I'm guessing that that line runs goes to the air pump, since pre-96 cars didn't have that third nipple at all, and also didn't have an air pump. But what's confusing me, is I had someone on ClubGP with a 1996 GTP take pics of his, and he doesn't have that nipple either. But he gave me the part number on his, and I crossed it over and it's the same part as mine.

Can someone with this line on their car please take pics and show me where the other end might be so I can hook it back up? I have 2 days to get my car inspected before my temp plates run out, and can't get it inspected with a check engine light on.

I have seen on occasion an open elbow on the purge control, I suppose it is a vent. If so and you have it blocked, that would be a problem. This does NOT connect to the secondary air system in any way. As for that dealership, WTF is their problem? Maybe they didn't want to tell you that they don't have any real mechanics working there. I bet they do a hell of an oil change though!

Yeah, take that bolt out of there. That hose is supposed to be an open vent. Then I'd find an honest dealer and get the air pump taken care of.

Honest dealer... wish there was such a thing.

This dealer is the closest one to me. The next closest one is the one that dicked me around with the diagnosis when my car was stalling. They told me a scan tool didn't exist for this car and BS'd me and said my LIM gaskets (which I just replaced a year before) and MAF were bad, gave me an estimate of $800+ to fix it. Turns out it was a broken wire to the MAF, and if they would've actually done what I paid them $90 to do, they would've found that. Besides that, the closest dealer is an hour away.

Yep. Problem is, I only have until Sunday when my temp plates run out unless I get it inspected, then I have another 10 days. There's no way I'm gonna have the air pump fixed by then.

They don't have a hardship extension rule based on the cost of repairs? I tell you, this shit has really gone too far. Would you believe that all that secondary air crap manages to achieve is several pounds of stench over the lifetime of the vehicle. So, in effect, leaping over quarters to pick up dimes. All in the name of preserving endangered Californians. The spotted owl is your friend. Go forth and fart carefully.

Sorry, got carried away there for a moment.

No they don't. Actually what I MIGHT be able to do, is go to get it inspected anyway, even though I know it's gonna fail, then they'll put a clear sticker on it meaning it passed everything except OBDII scan, and I have 30 days to fix the check engine light (air pump) and get it inspected. But I still have to fix my broken blinker before 5 PM tomorrow, and I'm working 8-4:30, so that's not happening. Not to mention my battery is totally garbage now.
