  • Timing Chain Replacement

My engine has "200K" on it. I am wondering how critical it is for the timing chain set to be replaced? I know that it is there just to transfer motion to the timing belt and to power the oil pump which kinda puts me on the fence with this. I have no issue with exchanging the tensioner but the timing chain set I see as something that may not be all that critcal? Other than the fact that it is a pain in the ass to change, if the set will last the life of the engine then I see no reason to change it? Thanks!

Iv never herd of one breaking but if your going to go as far as pulling the timing cover I would at least change the tensioner.

I've never heard of anyone having a single issue with the chain.

Thank you for the input guys. I intend to just replace the tensioner, the chain I did not think it was a big issue at all.

This may be a germane and worthwhile read from " The Timing Set Saga of Mr. Pink"....

Wrong chain though. The DOHC is a massive chain behind the belt setup. The chain does more than turn the oil pump. It drives the belt gears. What does the chain cost? How much is the tensioner?

A timing set is about $100. The tensioner was about $20.

I wouldn't even hesitate to replace the chain and gears then.
