  • Question : Is the 95 olds 3.4 DOHC an interference fit motor?

    Hello everyone
From what I can gather the 96 3.4 DOHC is an interference motor and not the prior 3.4DOHC engines.
    Is that an accurate statement?
The belt snapped on my 95 olds convertable- while on the hwy. I'm trying to save it's life with just a new belt and probably pulleys. Can't sink a lot into it, but it was running like a champ and the car just looks too good to trash. If it's not an interference motor I think I'll get the parts. Any help/direction would be appreciated.

there are LQ1s that snap belts at almost any RPM and still live with no bent valves.

seems to be more of a random chance than anything. GM however, does not specify if any of the LQ1s are interference motors....

I have an old GM training manual on the then new LQ1 that says its non-interference. I suppose that stance could have changed in 96 or whatever year received different pistons.

        Might be hope yet.
I'll check and see exactly what generation motor is in there. If I can fix the oil leak and replace the belt for a reasonable cost- I'd like to try it. Just hate to find out more work needs to be done once it's apart. Can't $afford$ any surprises.
If I can find a crate motor or a rebuilt reasonable enough, I'd rather go that route-depending on the cost. Anyone know of any dealerships with one as idle inventory?
Thanks for the info guys! - anyone with more info- I'd appreciate all I can get.

Oh I'd definitely try my luck on this engine. They do seem to occasionally bend valves, but the majority of the time they are fine.
