im having egr trouble with a
    94 3.4l cutlass 110,000 m a brief history
over the past winter the check engine light would come on periodically an go out. but passed emissions test.
as the osa temp dropped I realized the car was running cold like the thermostat was stuck open.
so I replaced it. an the Temperature is running normal now. But since that time the check engine light comes on right after starting the engine. i tried disconnecting the battery an the light is still coming on.
I don’t have a scanner to read codes, this is one of those obd 1.5models that takes a tech scanner to read them. I finally got around to taking it to a repair shop . they hooked a tech 2 scanner to it
an it showed an egr 3 . the tech said that the egr valve 3 sol style . was working but the port leaving the egr going into the intake was plugged up with carbon. he pulled the egr valve off with the engine running an sprayed an poured some sort of heavy carbon cleaner into it .
the light has been out over this past week but has flickered on a couple times. the tech said if the trouble continues he recommended pulling the intake an cleaning the port out. the engine appears to be running smooth, but i still think im getting poor gas milage even with the check engine light out do i need to dissconnect the battery again? does this type need to relearn or was this just a hard failure . thats clear now.

No, that's not gonna help it. Clearing the code doesn't make the problem go away. If the tech is right about the port carboning up, which it sound like maybe it is, it needs to be cleaned out. Either take the manifold off like he suggests, or maybe you can pull of the egr valve and starting spraying throttle body cleaner down the port and try jamming a hard bendable wire/rod down through the part to get all the carbon knocked off. I'm not sure of the location/ease of access on the older style intakes so maybe this isn't possible, but if its indeed clogged and you get it opened up it should help gas mileage (and shut the ligh off). EGR definitely helps fuel economy.
