  • when do you know when the I.A.C. is bad?

My car is a 96' grand prix 3.4 with 150,XXX miles bone stock. Somtimes at idle it surges between 800 and 1600 rpm. Other times after it warms up the idle is steady in gear but when i shift to neutral or park it dies but not every time, could this be a bad idle air control?

It could be sticking too. Have you pulled it out and tried cleaning it with carb cleaner?

sounds like a intake gasket or a VAC leak.. common with the DOHC's

Unplug the IAC during an event and see if anything changes.
Also tap the back of a screwdriver on the IAC pretty hard and see if it stumbles/dies.

i did the upper and lower intake gaskets in december because of coolant leaking into the intake ports, also hoping that it would cure the inermittent stalling in park. Stopped the coolant leak but the stalling problem is still there. So today i got home from work and pulled in the drivway and the car stumbles and dies in park. Started it back up and let the idle stabilize at 800 rpm popped the hood and unplugged the I.A.C. and the only time it acted different than usual was when i revved it a littlle,it sounded doggy and it would not return to 800 rpm
