  • aftermarket injector upgrades?

I'm going to replace my injectors in my 1992 Grand Prix with an LQ1. I am trying to find a better replacement (better design) other than the stock ones. I've heard the stock ones aren't very good. Otherwise I'm going to get them rebuilt and flow matched. Thanks in advance.

Join the club. Remember, LQ1's need a dual pattern injectors which makes things difficult.

From the W-Body forum, one person said that these would work. Said they have a better spray pattern and much cheaper.

I have used Accels replacement 3.4L DOHC injectors, there fully balanced as well.

I have never had any problems with them, in fact my own 3.4 DOHC ran WAY SMOOTHER after installing them.

I would not use that Ford injector in an LQ1. It may be a great injector for lots of engines, but not a DOHC engine. All DOHC engines, whether it's an LQ1, Northstar, LY7, or any other modern DOHC from GM or anybody else, use dual pattern injectors that squirt two cones of fuel, one at each valve (unless you have an LT5 from a Corvette ZR1 where each valve has it's own injector. 16 fuel injectors! ). A single pattern injector like that will just squirt fuel in a puddle on the bridge between the valves where it gets sucked in as larger drops instead of a highly atomized mixture.

My GTP has L32 (Supercharged S3 3800) injectors in it now. The car runs well, but the tech 2 shows it running lean, even though it smells rich. Short and Long Term fuel trims are each around 15%. This should not be the case with injectors 50% bigger than stock. My hypothesis is that since the fuel is not well atomized from the puddling in the ports and going in as larger unatomized drops, it is taking more of fuel to get the kind of complete stoichiometric burn the PCM wants. My fuel trims are richest at idle and decel. It is less rich at cruise and is close to 0% at high RPM acceleration. This makes sense that the problem is worst when airflow is low and slow.

I'm in the process of procuring some stock injectors at the moment and seeing if this makes a difference for me.

I've been searching some time for information about the injectors from the new LY7 3.6 DOHC engine, particularly the flow rate. It appears they are rated 23.6 lbs @ 43 psi. So they are just slightly larger than a stock LQ1 injector.

Like an LQ1, it has dual pattern injectors and some GM seems pretty proud of their design saying it has a "dual tip" design provides better atomization that older "single tip" models. If it is the same dimensions as an LQ1 injector and fits in our intake, this would probably be a great upgrade injector. It will most likely require splicing in different connectors, but that isn't a big deal.
