  • excessive gas usage

Hi all have a 95 lumina, seems lately been using a lot of gas.A tank of gas lasts only 2 days of highway driving to work and back home.approx 180km for a round trip.So im getting around 360km per tank or about 220 miles per tank is this normal?or other. Thanks all. Also its winter here now in Ontario. Also last summer did minor tune up plugs change airfilter, new pcv valve and regular oil changes, clean out maf sensor.

you have a 17 gallon tank so 220/17=13mpg, which is really low

I doubt he draining the tank completely, so you can't really use 17 gallons. How much have you put in at fill up? That's the easiest way to figure it out. It still seems low, but it depends on how you drive as well.

you said there is a MAF: is it a 3.4? because the 95 3100 never had MAFs unless it's an A-Body...

i expect less economy from a 3.4 due to the gearing and the fact that it loves higher-RPM operation than the OHV motors.

regardless: how long do you let it warm up, how quickly do you accelerate to your desired speed, are any codes being thrown, how old is the O2 sensor, what amount of ethanol is in the fuel you are using, what grade is it, how old is the fuel filter....

i think that's all at the moment.

This is the DOHC section, so I would say that it is probably the 3.4DOHC.

I let it warm up for 5 minutes, ethanol is 10 percent regular fuel,o2 sensor is orginal and no codes, fuel filter havent changed since owend last year.I accelerate normanlly no jack rabbit and try to keep it at 100km or 60mpg on the hhighway.

1, Our fuel here in Canada, especially Ontario SUX!!!!!!!
2, Though you clean the Maf, it could still be faulty.
3, Skewed HO2S's could cause this as well.

I would recommend scanning to see the Data, where in Ontario are you?

If it's the original O2, I would start there. They get slower over time and not as accurate. This causes the ECM to run the engine more rich. Recommended change interval on an O2 IIRC is around 50-60k miles.

Hence the reason I ask how much gas he put in his tank (besides full).
