Welcome to the site!
You can't be sure that you will get the timing right unless you do it like this. Luckily for you, you have the setup with the tapered collette and not the lock rings, making the timing job easier. This thread will tell you how to time it the correct way.

As mentioned, in short, NO. However, if you got the car for pennys its worth taking the time and doing it right.
Just remember Cam flats on the front bank need to be the opposite of those on the rear bank... that little detail hung me up for almost 6 months.

That and if it has ever been timed right in the past those paint marks will not be correct.-60v6's 2nd Jon M.

You might have to order a whole timing cover set and just use the seal.-60v6's 2nd Jon M.

well searched high and low even went to a place to match it up and they couldnt get it its a odd size apparently made by national for gm and nation wouldn't release a cross reference so i ordered one from a stealership they had a hard time finding one they have to get it from out of state so i should have the seal on fri at the latest they said so again i wait..... so anybody have any good ideas on how to put that seal in without wrecken it ? there is not enough room with a socket and hammer so im thinken bout pressing it in using the sprocket and bolt but i dont wanna risk snapen the bolt so i think i may drop the cradle on that side and work threw the fender well anybody have other thoughts?

well my idea wrked with the seal i used the intermediate shaft sprocket with the bolt and some grease on it wrked perfect and after it was in as far as i could go i took it back off and used the old seal as a spacer to finish pushing it in now i still wait tho): one of the cam gear bolts was rounded off pretty bad already so i had to weld a socket to it and then order a bolt from the dealer made a pretty sweet cam gear holder in the process tho

Could be an iffy hub assembly. The best thing to do is find someone with an ABS scanner and have them tell you which wheel is the one throwing the ABS computer into a fit.-60v6's 2nd Jon M.
