what would be the easiest way to take the 3.4 out of a lumina z34?so far i think the easiest way would be to go through the k bar out the bottom.any tips?

Don't think it really matters but, you don't mention what year. On my 93 Z34 I dropped the engine and tranny on the cradle. It's not that hard,,, I did it all alone. I only have one leg and that happens to be my good one!!! I disconnected all the wires (mostly plugs) and hoses.. Throttle cable, shift cable and whatever else might get in the way/prevent the engine from coming out. Then I jacked it up,, HIGH up... I was able to get a measurement off of the new engine to make sure it was high enough. I pulled the strut towers together with the lower control arm as a unit,,, popped the tie-rod ends and sway-bar off first... Undid the steering coupler and exhaust.. That was the two mounts in the back on the mufflers, one at the resonator and the two spring-loaded bolts that hook the exhaust to the manifold... Pulled it off to the side as a unit... Probably a few more things that I don't remember right now.. I made a lift out of an ATV jack to lower the engine/trans... Here's a link to my post about the job, it has pics of the lift I'm talking about... It worked like a CHARM!!!

    Good Luck,,,
    Tom...

thanx a lot.i used the same technique you did except i hat had a lift in shop class.the engine is out and with it conected to the transmission still it looks massive lol.but um while its out are their any cheap mods that i could do to it while its out also i found some type of plastic intake tube or something like that that was just shoved between the engine and trans and not connected to any thing, any ideas of what it could be?

that plastic tube sounds like a cooling duct for the alternator. pocket-rocket can confirm...

Was it around 1"x3" rectangle and hooked on a bracket bolted to the oil pan? Those are used (as Robert said) to cool the alternator on 92+ engines. 91 had a small squirrel cage style fan that mounted under the relay/fuse panel with a duct that went to the back of the engine.

Yeah, Id also say cooling duct for the alt... There should be a sort of lip or flange on the back of the alt that the duct plugs onto.. NOTE: my opinion would be to do whatever it takes to hook up the duct.. They are in a REAL dead air space and fail OFTEN,,, even with the duct-work.. Tho I believe 92s had a fan in/on the fenderwell with a hose/duct going to the alt.. As said pocket-rocket has experience with DOHCs of both flavors.. Mine is 93 and just has the duct that goes straight down....
You didn't say you had a LIFT!!! Damn!!! That would make it MUCH easier!!
As for mods,, you still didn't mention a year,, if it's 91-93,, probably a chip from Ben (the WOT-TECH logo at the top,, click it) unless you want to spend the money and learn how to tune.. robertisaar would be the one ask about that... You can change the cam timing.. Other than port work and gasket matching there isn't much you can do.. There isn't much of an aftermarket for these cars... Now if you're good at fabbing and such, there is a LOT of power that could be had....
            Glad you're making progress!!!

I would like to note, the duct on mine was on the 92 (factory 5 speed) and the fan/hose combo was on the 91 (factory auto), so that might be the defining factor. I would also strongly suggest you do what you can to hook that thing up. I have an alternator job down to around an hour, but a little work now will save $$$ and time later. I want a lift

My current plan of attack is to support the engine/trans from the top with my shop crane, drop the subframe from the car and then lower the engine/trans down enough to separate the trans out of the engine bay (beneath the car) then pull the engine out the top. Easier would be if I can pull the getrag and dohc as a unit right out the top but I don't think I will have the clearance on the drivers side.

What can I expect the subframe to weigh? I'm going to have to 'slide' it out from beneath the car. Problem is the 'legs' of the shop crane will also be under the car so I think it is going to end up being a pain.

THe issue is that it is always a pain to align trans to engine when either of them is in the car. Especially when you're dealing with the splines on an input shaft lining up to a clutch disc. Ideally I want to assemble engine/trans outside of the car and install as a unit. I'll be keeping an eye on this thread.

Subframes are around 75-125 lbs (possibly a little bit more) if I had to throw a number on it. They aren't light, but they aren't super heavy either. The last one I messed with was from a 3400 minivan, and it's slightly larger than a w body subframe, but I had no problem moving it around by myself or picking it up to lean against a wall out of the way. If you do drop the subframe, you will be able to pull both out from the top if you drop the transmission side down and get a good angle on the combo. Heck, you could probably still do it without dropping the frame, making your job easier/faster.

Robert hit the nail on the head. Alternator cooling duct.

I would think about it, but Josh still has Mod rights to this forum, so it's not my call.
