  • Plenum and Intake Gasket

    Hi,
Got this terrible coolant leak from the driver side of the intake, just streaming out. First I thought it was the Temp sensor, so I tried tightning it but still the same thing.
Has anyone else had this water leak from that side of the instake, I'm pretty sure its the intake gasket but yeah never know.

Any other gaskets I should be aware of that I should replace since its going to be in pieces ?

    Any suggestions would be great.

    Thanx

could be coming from the tb coolant loop. Along with the o ring there is a short peice of 3/4 inch heater hose which is known to leak. Like it says above go ahead and do both the plenum and intake gaskets while your there cause it seems to be a recuring theme with these engines.

The car has 200,000KMS on it. I'm going to replace the small hose in between the plenum and intake. I will try and check the famous "O" ring oil ring for the non exsisting distributor
What is tricky about the lower intake ?
Something special about doing it or something I should be looking for ?

Thanx for the responses so far.

If I am reading this right, you have trouble with the Pipe Assembly tube just underneath your temp sensor. This is a commen problem with the 3.1 engine. the main problem is that GM used threadlock on the assembly instead of using antiseize. so what happens is that the assembly snaps leaving the threads inside the intake. I am currently fixing this same problem on my 90 Z24. Its a LOT of fun<sarcastic>

the assembly is about 10 dollars. email me if you need further assistance on this.

The motor I'm working on is the 3.4 in the Z34 chassis. There is nothing snapped, I'm pretty sure the lower intake gasket has a crack in it. The 3.4 and the 3.1 motors are slightly different.
            Thanx anyway for the response.

I ve owned both and BOTH had tb circuit leaks more than once. Make sure you check this out and let us know. BTW dont get these O rings mixed up. There is a throttle body coolant oring and a distributer(LESS) oring.

                Tips

I will keep the "O" ring mixing up in mind. I think changing the gaskets is really not a big deal.. I Hope

If you have anymore tips please let me know, going to take my time with the gasket change since I bought and older Explorer.

Anyway thanx for all the information, little bits of information at a time is really helpful.

If its shooting out under the TB, its probably that little rubber hose that was mentioned. I tore my intake off 3 times looking for my leak before I found a nice slice in that rubber hose.

                    Update !!

I finally removed the lower intake to find were the leak was from, the intake gasket had a crack in it and the plenum gasket had a few cracks.
I need to replace some parts and I'm not sure what they are called.
There is a vacuum hose underneath the lower intake that mounts onto the breather on the motor, I broke it since it was so brittle.
Does anyone know what it is called, so i can replace it.
Also does the vacuum harness cost alot ?
Have a few lines that broke as well.

Any help would be much appreiciated.

                    Thanx in advance.

Its faster, cheaper, and more durable to go by vacuum hose and splice it in where you broke the plastic.

                        Finally Finished

Got all the parts that I needed and parts that I kinda broke.
Took my time because I have another car to drive and put it all together last weekend and no leaks and the idle does not jump up to 3000 when I first start the car. It had a few problems. THe plenum gasket was cracked the lower instaked gasket was cracked. I'm surprised it was running this long.
Well its all together and it idles nicely again and no leaks.

Thanx to all who gave their input

                          Lower intake Gaskets

I am in the proccess of replacing lower intake gaskets.

How do I reach those 10mm bolts that hold the lower intake on.

Do I have to remove the fuel injectors?

If I do how to I remove them?

                          HELP!

remove the fuel rail hold down bolts and wiggle the rail and injectors(as one peice) out of their bores. Then just flop the whole assembly over to the drivers side without disconnecting the the fuel lines. Then the bolts will be easy to get too. There is a couple that are kinda hidden. Oh yeah I always use new injector orings when re installing the injectors. There cheap.
