  • Question : 2 Questions

The first question is: My tachometer in my instrument cluster seems to be sticking. Is this a common problem? Is there a fix for it?

Second Question is: My EGR valve clicks when I rev up the engine. What is causing this and how do I fix this?

My vehicle is a 1993 Pontiac Grand Prix SE with a 3.4L MPFI DOHC V6 5 spd. Thanks!

assuming you have the same/similar cluster as my wife's GP:

there have always been problems with them... from the low fuel/check guages light being on 100% of the time due to a bad solder joint and the sticking you mentioned, and i'm sure others as well...

what do you mean by it clicks? is it stupid-loud? it should be hard to hear over the noise of the LQ1...

a way to test the EGR is to connect pin D to a good 12volt source, and then connect pins A B and C to known-good grounds(one at a time) to see if a certain valve is sticking.

EDIT: if the lead arcs and you don't hear the solenoid move, its bad. you should hear it easily if the engine is off.

The ticking or clicking I'm hearing is like when I rev the car up it would sound like an injector that's really really loud. Kinda sounds like a spark plug arcing its spark on metal. When I let off the throttle, it stops clicking. Its just really annoying!

test them the way i described, or if you have a tech1 or 2, do it that way. with the tech tools, you open the valves when the motors running. solenoid 1 should make it stumble noticeably, solenoid 2 should almost kill it and solenoid 3 should kill the motor unless its got a VERY tight tune...

I ran your test, all 3 solenoids seem fine, opens and closes fine, took a little carb cleaner and cleaned out the inside and the diaphram of the solenoid with open/close test and cleaned most the carbon out. Ran a idle re-learn and now it seems to be running fine without stumbling! Its amazing what 20 minutes of your time can make a difference. Now to the sticking tach prob.
