  • Question : CMP Connector Plug Gone Missing!

    Hello,

I am a newbie here and I just got a 93 Pont Grand Prix SE with a 3.4L V6 and 5spd. The camshaft position sensor plug in is not where its supposed to be at and not plugged in, after spending a whole day looking for the damn plug, I couldn't find it. Does anyone know where on the wire harness does the wires to the plug come out at? My last resort option is tapping into the wires from the ECM and making my own harness/plug. The car starts fine, idles a little high (1200 rpms), when warm oil pressure is over redline, stumbles a bit possibly due to the CMP not being plugged in. Any help would be appreciated!

    93 doesn't use a cam sensor... 94-up do...

I borrowed this pic off another forum to illustrate what I am looking for. The area in question is in the red box. Its the plug from that that goes to the main wire harness. Its a little 3 pin plug that plugs into that.

91-93 does not use it. They are MPFI, not SFI. You don't have the 24x crank sensor on the crank pulley either.

So I'm hunting something that doesn't exist? Why is there a CMP in there if they don't use it? Kind of odd....

            It isn't the original engine.

When I CarFax my VIN and on any other VIN check it say that its 3.4L DOHC V6 SFI, 1993 Pontiac Grand Prix. So it could be a possibility that it may have the wrong wire harness in there then? It does have a VIN X in the 8th space of the VIN.

Vin X is 3.4 DOHC. Carfax is wrong when it says SFI. 91-93 are MPFI, no exceptions.

ok so it is MPFI and it doesn't need that connector? So I can finally stop my search for the damn thing? That is the best news I heard all day LOL! I have a quick question though, would a clogged EGR cause a bouncy idle or irratic idle?

The EGR is closed at idle, but if it is stuck open, that will cause all kinds of problems, most noticable at idle. Is the service engine soon light on?

Intake gasket could be (vacuum) leaking, timing could be off, oil on the spark plug boots.

Nope but whats weird about it is at warm idle I idle at 1200 rpms, but its a bouncy, pulse like idle. It would be at 1200 rpms drop to 800-900 then come back up to 1200 rpms. I havent checked the IAC yet but I was told that the IAT was bad also. I know I have to change my oil pressure sensor because its showing that over the red line. I know the previous owner just changed the MAP sensor.

They probably used the dummy light OPS instead of a real gauge that would need the variable resistance.

Agreed. 94+ only have a cam position sensor.

When my Cutlass had an oil pressure switch instead of an oil pressure sending unit (engine swap), the gauge would peg before the engine was started (dummy light on). Then once it was started and pressure went up enough to trip the switch, the gauge would go to 0 (dummy light off), so placing a switch where a sending unit goes makes the gauge work backwards.

By chance do you have a Fram oil filter on the car?
