  • 95 GTP sounds cammed

ok my boss just bought a 1995 GTP with the 3.4 DOHC for his doughter after a 80 year old totaled out his 1995 SE. it runs like a raped ape and will break loose going into second. but at idle it sounds like it has a huge cam any ideas why is this normal?

i do not know mutch a bought these engines so i figured i would ask here

if it sounds like it should be running on something other than gasoline, look for a vacuum leak...

both the monte and the GP sound almost like top fuel when i pull the brake booster vacuum line off to pour some good old seafoam in to clean out the motor...

LQ1s don't start making a lot of torque until 2500/3000. a bigger cam would make it even worse, since it would shift the powerband up even higher...

thats about how mine sound with the line pulled, except without the gravel/flatulent exhaust noise the 3.8s make.

when you find out what this 'problem' is, let me know. i wouldnt mind breaking mine aswell.

Could be the cam timing itself. Being that it has separate intake and exhaust cams means that if either is out of time the overlap between the two has changed. A lot of overlap can make the engine lope. The car could have intentionally modified cam timing as well, the -13* on the exhaust cams is good for a power bump and does cause the engine to lope... the only thing that doesn't fit the bill is that you say the car has seeminly more bottom end torque then it stock and that is something that does not happen with the -13 timing.

I'd do what others say first and check for vacuum leaks. Spraying carb cleaner on the intake gaskets and listening for a change in idle is a good indicator of a bad gasket. You can also go ahead and replace the intake gaskets and change the plugs/wires as a tuneup on a 'new' car. The gaskets are cheap for the 91-95 motors and easy to change.

well the car just had the timing belt replaced aperantly by the local dealer . (he found a recepit in the glove box dated last month) so i think the cams would be factory timed then. he is going to change all the vac lines just to make sure with how old the car is some could be dry rotted

hmmm more torque would be nice... might be going to the rocky mountains this weekend, high altitudes, low oxygen and no low end power already dont sound like fun.
anyone ever try an electric supercharger?? might be what i need to suck in more air.

-lol why dont they make an electric turbo?

do NOT touch an electric anything.... they "create" boost, something your MAP sensor can't read. although you're going to be in a low-altitude area and wouldn't be able to move enough air to make boost, you're going to restrict your intake even further, meaning the "blower" will need to be running at all times.

about the only electric power adder i've ever seen thats done anything is the e-RAM, that thing is a beast, pulling like 800watts(smallest model)...

I'd hope so, but honestly I don't trust anyone but myself when it comes to timing the engine. The LQ1 requires special tools and some dealers probably haven't seen this motor in years. Some techs may have never done it before. I'd almost put money that the belt was the issue since it was recently timed.

^X2, its a very good explanation....

and for reference, i don't trust anyone doing anything to any vehicle... except for alignments, but thats only because i don't have the equipment for it.
