  • Did Sparkplugs and Oil Leak

Took some pics, engine is dirty as a mofo, but i thought i would show it off anyhow.

did a couple other fixes, most of my oil was probably leaking from where the PCV connected to the top of the block, the hose was cracked all the way around. lol my vacuum line for my brake booster was also a little short was was being pinched a little (brakes were acting funny) so i bought some hose and fixed that, re did a couple other vacuum lines and put it all back together with new sparkplugs (wires next pay day) im still waiting for my PCed UIM and valve covers.

ALOT better, you were right about my oil leak too. but there was also another one. the oil valley (i dont know what its called) was leaking too, but the hose for the PCV was DESTROYED underneath the LIM. another prob i was having was since i changed engines (to one 2 years newer) alot of the fittings and stuff were different, so i went along and changed a bunch of other vacuum lines and shit. all in all the old plugs didnt look very bad, that pic there is pretty much what all of them looked like (except for one that was almost touching it had such a small gap.) and incase anyone wants to have a mechanical race. lets line our LQ1s up and see who can get the LIM off first? hahaha ive done mine 4 times now since i bought my car!! and theres gonna be one more time when the parts get back from PC!!! lol

That was the hose I was trying to see when I was there....

Make sure its thick walled and won't kink and that its clamped good.

ive yet to change my alternator in the car, when i did the motor swap i put a new one in and crossed my fingers. next weekend ill be taking everything apart again, because something is still leaking somewhere. it must be found and eliminated. i can tell its up top cuz on the tranny side i still see fresh oil. and in the hundreds (probably more like 150) of k ive done since i fixed it (and the liter of oil it lost) but i do know im getting pretty good at working on this motor, i havent even made myself bleed once in taking it apart 3 or 4 times. wanna trade me your black 91 for my red 91? is it in nice shape?

I'd put money on that Distributor O-Ring Leaking. You have to remove the rear head to properly replace the o-ring.

thats what all the mechanics and the dealerships say, but even on this very site they say otherwise. and to me it doesnt make sense how if you make sure the cover isnt gonna leak, how is the shaft under it gonna make a difference?

Uh what did you just say?

Just clean the engine off really well and put dye in the oil. Then after a couple days, get the goggles on and a light, proceed to check for the leaky leak leak leak.

is it gonna hurt anything if while my UIM is off, i spray it down with degreaser, let it sit for 10 mins or so, and pressure wash the shit out of it? will i have to cover anything in the middle of the engine there up? or is it gonna make a difference if my engine swalows a gulp or two of water? (i dont have a compressor at home, so i cant blow the ports out)
i suppose stuffing rags inside the heads with the LIM off should do the trick, eh?

Use plastic bags, stuff rags, use duct tape, and just plain try to avoid directly spraying into any unwanted areas. You don't want to drown that motor with cleansers or abnormal amounts of water.

yeah thats what i figured... one of these days i should run some flush or something through my motor. ive been reading about other peoples stuck lifters and mine are kinda noisy when i fist start my motor too... i used to own a 3800 so im used to noise from the engine. lol especially when cold. i figured it just needed a warm up time. meh, who knows.

not good enough. have to re do it again this weekend. i have smoke still. i can see why though in the picture, there is still antifreeze next to the shaft... heh i said shaft. but next time im going to drown it in a whole can of brake cleaner or a case.... just clean the shit right out of that o ring seal. what happens if you weld it?
(edit: this picture is HUGE when you click on it... 5.5 MB)

IIRC that distributor "cap" is alloy. You can't weld aluminum to cast steel.
