  • Loss of Crank Signal - Intermittent @ High RPM

This morning I wound it out getting on the highway. In first gear at around 6500 rpm it cut out for a split second and then continued up. 2nd gear, same thing @ 6500 rpm the engine cut out just momentarily and then continued to climb. Both times that it cutout was for less than 1 second. I did not attempt to rev it that high again. Both times that this happened it also lost the tach signal. Other than the two times I described it had no other issue for the remainder of my commute.

I'm trying to determine what I should be looking at first. Since the tach signal was lost both times I think that safely eliminates things like coil packs, spark plug wires and spark plugs because none of those things could cause the loss of the tach signal. The loss of the tach signal I belive indicates that the ICM lost the signal from the CPS. I plan on datalogging it tonight and try to replicate the problem. If the scan shows 0 RPM at the time that the motor cuts out, and in reality it is at 6000+, then that will confirm loss of CPS signal. So right now I'm thinking it must be a faulty CPS, CPS wiring or ignition module. Any other ideas? I hate electrical problems!

    Thats what I would check,

If you have a Scanner, I would drive with it hooked up and see what you notice on the data screen.

Ya, thats what I plan on doing this evening. I have my laptop/TunerPro to datalog. I hope it does it, nothing worse than intermittent electrical issues!

I tried to datalog the problem but I couldn't recreate it this afternoon. In doing some other work I had to move the ICM a few inches and in doing so I put some stress on the power/ground wires. The ICM is not in the stock location and I had been using a stake-on on the ground wire to ground it - when I moved the ICM it pulled out of the stake-on. Maybe it was loose to begin with and that was my problem, maybe I just overstressed it and it was fine before. I'll never know. I repaired it with a new stake-on, this time it is crimped and soldered. For now, I'm going to keep on driving and if it happens again I'll keep on troubleshooting.
