  • 1991 Lumina Nostart Code 42

Hi! My name is Clinton, and im an LQ1aholic. im a new member here, and am a member of GMWbody.com too. but i have recently sold my regal and stepped up to a 1991 Lumina Z34. however it comes with problems....
so enough of the introductions and on to the begging for help.
these are the stats, car is a 91 with 108,xxxkm on it, the motor is from a 93 with 122,xxxkm on it. the swap was a pain in the ass cuz fittings were different and stuff, i had a mechanic do it... i was scared of that HUGE monster in there.
so, the first two days i had it it ran fine, till it stopped because of a faulty fuel injector. so a new filter and new injector later im on the road again, for about 2 more weeks, now im down and when it does start it runs like a bucket of ass, knocking... misfiring and running like complete shat. its throwing code 42 Electronic Timing or something or other... i have looked everywhere and the only thing i can think of is the module the coils are mounted on being bad, the coils are sending spark, but i hear there is a timing module there?

HELP PLEASE!!! i love this car and cant afford another one yet!! hahaha
This is my CarDomain page for my Lumina. any comments, help or advice will be greatly appreciated!!

do you have fuel pressure? if your injector was bad and you filter was plugged you may have burned up the pump... other thing that could cause a no start could be a crank possistion sensor. if thoes are good then i would also look at the ignition module (where the coils plug too).

is there a way to test the ignitin module? ive read some things about using my ohm meter to check it, but that the car has to be cranking, and because of the location of the damn thing on the old 3.4s its probably not the easiest thing to do in the driveway, and assuming it is bad, what other ones will work for its replacement? cuz i know alot of other ones are sittin right on top in plain view with all the room in the world (reminiscent of 3800 days. -days i didnt haveto work on a motor...) so would one off of say a 3.1 of a similar year work? and as for the crank sensor, where would a guy find one of those on these engines? can it be found without a hoist? i have to take my plenum and stuff off already to install some powder coated red valve covers, and plenum. plus fix that infernal distributor shaft oil leak, so if i do it all in one shot and use my gfs car to get around till then, it shouldnt be a big deal...

-maybe a fuel pressure meter wouldnt be a bad investment.

ok. so i threw in a new ignition module, the thing the coils plug into. god what a pain in the ass to do, but i did it with the rad and fans still in!! haha the car will start but it sounds like its misfiring and you can see it shake, the only way to keep it running is to hold the gas.... so next up i guess is a fuel pump

          Thanks HayesPerformance (Dave)
he got my car running in a matter of minutes!! turns out it was probably the bad ignition module, in combination with being WAY flooded, and WAY out of tune.
so now that its running and i can take it to get parts, i think its time for that tune up he was talking about. new plug wires, new plugs and to have a shop set the timing for me. lol i dont wanna screw with that stuff and do it myself. its too scary for me!
