  • Question : 1991 Chevy Lumina Euro 3.1 Ticking

Hi everyone, My name is Eric. I bought a 1991 Chevy Lumina Euro for seven hundred fifty dollars day before yesterday. The guy was selling it for his 92 year old dad, who was a mechanic, and recently lost his license. Seventy seven thousand miles, Great condition, EVERYTHING works with the exception of the passanger side window switch. Even the original manual is in the glove box.

There was a slight ticking sound emanating from, it seemed, the valve cover or thereabouts. It has progressively gotten worse in the last two days. Not drastically but noticeably. Of course, I've been having a bit of fun with the car in the last two days; some hard driving. Occasionally I will catch the scent of fuel coming from the exhaust; like uncombusted fuel or maybe the catalytic converter is bad. I've yet to check the plugs. I suspect that it is a lifter making the tick; though I am not sure. Any ideas or suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks.

More than likely, Yes lifters. My old lifters use to tick alot. I added GM's engine oil supplement to my old engine and it DID help the lifter ticking.
