  • ticking sound in the grand piece.

i can best describe it as ticking. coming from the engine, and the longer the engine runs, the more pronounced the ticking gets. and its gotten worse over the last 2 weeks or so. initially i could only barely hear it while idling, now i can hear it most of the time once the car warms up.

i tried to get rid of as much background noise while filming, i took about 7 total recordings, but my sound on my computer has decided it no longer wants to work -- so i cant edit any of them down. this one seems to be the best.

you might not even be able to hear it, but thanks for looking, if you do.

    any idea what it is?

I can't make out any ticking. Maybe you could record from the engine bay instead of in the car. Have you checked your oil??

Can't hear any ticking sounds in the video. Like the post above said. Check the oil level and possibly check the tranny fluid level make sure they are correct.

Purchase yourself a stethoscope....they are not expensive and are useful when trying to locate hard to hear sounds/clicks/noises that one can't pinpoint with just your ear.

oil level should be fine, just changed it not too long ago, and no leaks. ill check it tomorrow to be sure.

if its a lifter, how urgent is it to get fixed? and how involved would it be for me to fix it? i assume itd be around or over $1k to pay a shop to fix it . . .

              oh, 129000 miles.

Lifter tick really isn't urgent thing to fix. Mine use to tick all the time. Usually just means they are not getting as much oil up there as they should. I started using different oil to get rid of the ticking.

What grade oil are you using? and what brand?

Yes. This car has 24 lifters. Whoever told you must not know to much about the 3.4 DOHC. Are you using 5W-30?

hmmm..I have the light weight lifters in my car so I am used to hearing them tick a lot. What I have done to not get them to tick so loud is I started using Castrol Syntec 5W-40 which has helped a lot. It may not be the oil for your car, you may actually have a collapsed lifter that is ticking, but I could be wrong.

Only way I know for sure to tell is to take it out. Once you have it out try pushing on button in the middle. It should be hard to push it down and if you let go it should pop back to normal.

Here is a pic of what it looks like. The little button in the middle is what I am talking about.
