Actually I think the DOHC idles high when you first start it as part of the emissions programming. It's to help warm up the engine. Also, a lot of us have idling problems. There's a GM TSB that addresses the problem, search for it in the forums here, it's been posted a few times. New injectors, crazy expensive. Search for "phantom stall"

Trust me learn from our mistakes. I've replaced the EGR, IAC, O2, tried another TPS, it's the stock injectors on the pre-97 (96?) DOHC's.

You can also check the upper and lower intake gaskets. They're easy to replace... at least when compared to a timing belt or alternator on these engines.

mmmhmm. If you had a leak, you'd know it. Mine goes to about 2k when it starts, but I learned that it's about 200rpm off, so it's actually 1800rpm. If you're engine's loping, sounds like your timing's off. One tooth would do it (on anything). Also might want to check your plug wires if you removed them.
Okay now, that's enough of that.
