Ever since iv had the car its alawys been really guttless below 3500, from there up it seems about normal. now ive never ridden in a properly running 3.4 car but i know its better than mine. ive replaced about every sensor on the car and done all the tune up items. could the timing cause it to have lost its bottom end but retained its top end?

sounds like someone previously did a 13 degrees retard on your car in the past.
Gutless down low on the lower RPM band range is pretty much normal for the 3.4 DOHC.Taylor

when was the t-belt done last? could be off or if its old it could be off time from the belt streching.. or maybe the motor is just getting tired...

I don't recall the exact RPM that the 91 did it, but it used to be gutless until a certain RPM, then it was like someone flipped a switch or a turbo spooled and it would tear off from that RPM on. Then the T-belt shredded on Ben, we replaced it (t-belt crash course ftw!) and after that it didn't do it as bad. So yeah, I am on the replace the timing belt band wagon. On a side note, the car didn't pull as hard up top after that and I actually lost power as it wouldn't go as fast in the same distance at a place I would test cars by where I lived.-60v6's 2nd Jon M.

I need to figure out what I did differently with the 3.4 DOHC in my 1995 Cutlass Supreme. That car will actually spin the tires, but still has power on the upper RPM range (vid coming once I find the charger for my camera).
I didn't do anything fancy with the timing either. I just did it to the STOCK timing.Taylor

when i say gutless i mean it wont spin tires at all ever, its not even close. the only thing im leary about doing the timing is the actuator, the write up dosnt really go into enough detail on what you have to do with it or what it does. if someone could fill me in on it that would be great.92 Lumina euro 3.4 DOHC 139,XXX miles

all you do to the actuator is remove the rubber plug on the back of it, and then get a PAPER CLIP. You use a small flathead screwdrive to tighten a screw that is under the plug on the end. There is another rubber plug on the side, but you do NOT remove it. When you got the screw on the end tightened all the way down, you push the paperclip through the rubber on the side, and then slowly loosen that screw you tightened until the paper clip slips into place. Then all you have to do is put the plug back on the end, and install it CAREFULLY.
Here is a vid of my twin cam. You will see what I mean about mine is NOT normal.

Actually when you set the paper clip in its place, put the plug end up and fill it with Mobil 1, then put the plug back onI got your back Taylor

Thanks jon
You know, when I did the timing belt on this car, I didn't fill it with oil OR put the plug back in. In all honesty, if this engine ever goes out, I will probably replace it with a pushrod engine.Taylor
