  • Cruise control help

I was just wondering if anyone around here knows anything about cruise control. Mine stopped working the other day. What should I be looking at?

I doubt this is it if your's happened all at once, but ehre is what happened to me.

I know mine is a 5-speed, but the brake sensor is similiar. There is a plastic push button sensor right beneath my clutch and brake pedals. When either of the pedals is depressed, it pushes in the button and deactivates cruise control until button is released, at which time you normaly hit 'Resume Acceleration.' Now the button screws up or down about an inch to adjust it. My clutch one was screwed all of the way up, so the pedal was constantly depressing it so CC never worked. SO I disconnected the electrical thingy(pita) and screwed it all of the way in and reconnected it. Works perfect to this day!!!

    Just a thing to check....

ok, I found the sensor you are talking about. Now this is the way it would appear to work to me. When my brakes are not touched, the button should be depressed (the sensor is on the seat side of the pedal, not the engine side) Therefor, as soon as the brakes are touched, the button will be released, kicking CC off. Am I thinking right?

Yes you are, I described it backwards, sorry.

With mine, it wasn;t out far enough so the pedal never pushed the button in.

drive the car, and while driving hold your brake pedal up HARD with your foot, this made mine work and helped me find my problem

If that does not work, you could also have a bad vacuum line. IIRC, everyone that has the vacuum line problem says it's the one that goes between the vacuum ball and the cruise unit.

I just looked a little harder, there are 2 sensor buttons on mine. One right on top of the other, which one should I adjust? I tried to bottom one, but I can't get it to spin because the part of it where the electrical connections are made is too wide to get past a mount at one point.

I had to pull my electrical connections and reinstall them afterwards.

try driving the car with your left foot PULLING the vbrake Up HARD. Then activate CC and see if it works. This did it for me, and lemme know that that was the problem.

Then it probably isn't that sensor. Check by crauling under the dash though, worth a check.

Mine quit working one day out of the blue. While in use. The cable that runs from the CC unit on the left inside fender to the throttle body slipped out of its mounting bracket on the throttle body. The plastic retainer had broke. The CC was doing its job trying to move the butterfly but couldnt. A simple wire tie keeps that bitch working now. Hope this is your prob cause its an easy fix.

Sounds kinda like my 3/8 fuel hose, washer, and hairpin clip fixing my missing shifter bushing on both cars, lol.

Very true. Not to mention I don't want to spend what is it? $200 per shifter cable, or for both? Yeah, I was more then happy to spend $5 in parts to fix it my way, lol. Even if it is rigged, it works fine. No more shifter calble popping off of the pin on the tranny arm so I can't shift anymore. That shit sucks.
