  • Question : Wierd Grinding/Whining Noise From Engine

OK so here it is.. When in gear and on the brake and the A/C on with a load on the engine there is a grinding sound coming from under the hood.. As of right now the power steering pump whines and makes noises but the nosie is different.. It almost sounds like the ac clutch is turning on and off super fast.. The A/C blows cold but when in park and turning the steering wheel to the left and right and the hood open you can hear the ac clutch click on and off.. I was also wondering if the idler pulley for the accessory belt could make a noise like this.. I had a video but it deleted itself i will get another one tomorrow.. Also to add with the A/C on the whining noise sounds wayyy louder than a SUPERCHARGER.. Dont know what is going on here.. Hopefully someone can help..

    OK the video wasnt deleted..

get one of them stethoscopes and check it out. Water pump can make a grinding noise. I had my P/S pulley whine like a super charger and it had a huge crack in it. A/C clutch could be about to blow up. etc.

low on refrigerant will make it not engage the clutch. That wine sounds like a pulley issue. Maybe the bearings are dry in the pulley somewhere. Check the tensioner for wobble/looseness on the pulley, and look for cracks/movement of the P/S pulley, etc etc.

With the car off on mine you could press on the p/s pulley and see it wobble and see the crack around the center of it. I bought a $15 new pulley, pressed it off, and pressed a new one on with a puller tool.

My pump wasn't bad, the pulley on it was. I just replaced the pulley and kept the original pump.

If it only does it in gear its possible its transmission related, i have heard transmissions make noise similar even while not moving, and when you are tuning the steering wheel and the a/c clutch disengages , that is normal because the powersteering pressure switch will shut it off to prevent the engine from stalling
