  • 3.4l DOHC/Replace Timing belt tutorial

I have recently gotten a 1994 Olds Cutlass Supreme convertible with a DOHC 3.4l, it has 70k on it. One of the first things I checked was the timing belt. It seems to have about 2mm of the cover facing side worn off as the belt has crept towards the outside. It there a tutorial anywhere on how to change out the belt and related hardware? I'd like to do this as a father/son weekend project but realistically, I want to see what I'm getting into before investing in parts and the manual. Last engine rebuild I did was in the late 70's and engine compartments have taken on a new much more cramped look these days and my patience with certain teenagers is short.

You will have LOADS of fun with this engine compared to the ones you tinkered on in the 70's..... Back then it was easy.....a couple wires, a fuel line, a couple bolts...and out she would come. Actually, I used to sit in the engine compartment of my Blazer to work onthe engine.....nowhere near that much room in the new ones.

Anyhow, check the DOHC mainenance section and there is a sticky there about how to change it. PLEASE.....follow it. The factor manuals are wrong onhow to do it, as they were finally fixed late in 1996.

It isn't that bad to do once you get into it, but youwill need some special tools. A nice fatgher/son project for sure!

    Good luck!!!

      Did you mean here?:

Call me anal but I was looking for something a little more detailed. It did remind me though, to take that all important "before" picture of what it should look like when finished, with no pesky leftover parts...

        Try this:

It really isn't that hard once you get all the parts out of the way.....coolant reservoir, tensioner, coilpack, belt cover, p/s pump, etc.

Just listen to what thread says.....and do it exactly like that

Tks! Just what the doctor ordered. My 65 Chevy BelAir with a 225 straight 6 had room enough for one person to be on each side the engine.

Here is the same walkthough with pictures.

It is not too bad, but you have to be patient with it. I just did the timing belt in my 1995 Cutlass Supreme, but I had the engine out of the car (replacing it). It was not too bad. I did it without the hold down tools, and it was not too bad. I did have the rear exhaust cam slightly off, so I had to redo it, but it was not too difficult at all.
