  • Damn! Now My 3.4 DOHC Won't Run (Part I?)

Again....to bring you up to speed if you haven't seen my other threads... I am replaceing a 3100/4T60E in my 95 Lumina with a 3.4 DOHC/4T65E from a 97 Monte Carlo. Mechanically (except for the cracked front cover!) all has gone well..... I have all the factory parts installed to do the conversion right....

Now, here is my issue. At my first time firing it up, it ran like a POS. Came to find out I timed it according to the factory manual instead of the RIGHT way per Ben. I fixed that issue.....and it ran, but had a bad, regular miss, and wouldn't rev freely. I didn't even bother driving it, as it didn't do so good going up and down my driveway.... Anyhow, I pulled the codes and all I had was a P0300, misfire. Duh. I verified the ignition coils/module were good (replaced it with my setup off the 3100.....) and it behaved EXACTLY the same, so I assume the issue isn't the coils/module. On a couple suggestions of a plugged injector (or two, as the engine sat a while) I ended up getting a new set/fuel rail/FPR. Checked all of the injector connectors for voltage, and they were all good. Put it back together....same damn thing. In fact, it won't even run anymore. Starts up and runs for about 2-3 seconds, and then sputters out and dies. Yes, I have good fuel pressure the whole time, so that isn't a problem. I hooked up a noid light to one of the injector plugs, and here is what I get:

On Key on, as the fuel pump primes, it does a quick flash (this is the prime pulse), which is what it is supposed to do. I crank and it flashes, it starts, and flashes regularly, and then flashes sporadically (as the engine is dying) and right as the engine dies....it flashes again. So, somewhere along the line....the PCM is not firing the injectors corectly and this is causing my problem. WHY I do not know.....any ideas? I also blocked off the EGR and ALL other vacuum lines (booster, chassis, vacuum tank, etc) to rule leaks out....and same thing.

I am down to two things:

I checked my 7x sensor, and the resistance is fine. I hooked it up to a Fluke scopemeter, and it does generate a pattern while cranking, although by no means smooth. If I leave the 7x sensor unplugged on the ignition module, it will not fire at all....which is correct. When these go bad....can they work at low rpm, but "stick" at higher rpm? I'd rather not have to go in and change this thing unless I have to....

The PCM. The origin of this is unknown, but a buddy of mine had bought it and had Mike at Miltzy program it. I had him change some things too...and the program is stock (less a couple codes). Apparently it took a reprogram fine. Buuuuttt.... I do not know if the injector driver in it is any good. I have never seen one go out in a modern PCM, but you never know. Obviously this is easy to swap out, but expensive especially with the programming involved.

I haven't dug into every wire yet, but from what I see, and the ones I have checked, it's all good.

    HELP!!!!

Unfortunately, no. I have been debating getting one to try.....but I had this one programmed to remove the rear O2, and if I have to do that on ANOTHER PCM, it is going to get $$$.

I think I just need to pop for my own tuner and bi-directional scantools....

        Sigh.....

Too bad you didn't live here!

I have a complex scan tool (more so then my Snap-on scanner) that would be handy now!

            Yeah rub it in.....

It used to be that Canada had WAY higher tax rates than the US. Unfortunately, I live in Illinois, so I think we pay more than you. I love Canada, except for those screwy metric signs everywhere.....HAHA!

Speaking of scantools....has anyone ever used the Autoenginuity software? It looks real promising and is 90% of what a Tech2 can do.... Just no programming ability

Woohoo! OK, Dave, you put the bug in me about this.... While I don't have another 97 computer, I had a brainstorm (ok, brain drizzle) Saturday morning. All of a sudden, I remember I do have a 96 computer.....and the only difference was the trans. I went through the shop manual pinouts on it to verify the same functions were on the same pins (which they pretty much are) so why not. Plugged it in, turned on the key...fuel pump primed all looked good, so I hit it. Fired RIGHT up and ran like a baby. Well, a DOHC fire breathing baby WOOHOO!!! I mean seriously, ever since I put this thing together.....it NEVER ran right. I was soooo frustrated, I was seriously considering dumping it in the canal. I even blipped the throttle a couple times and revved right up to the limiter (remember, still in neutral so it cut out around 4000?) NICE! This baby revs a LOT quicker than the 3100 it replaced. Can I say it again....NICE! So now I am going to have to get another computer and have it programmed. Grrr.....nothing like spending MORE cash, but at least the end is in sight. I am looking forward to seeing what this thing can do.

Sooo....my guess, from the action of the NOID light, was that the quad driver must have been or is going out. I pulled the old PCM apart and nothing looked fried or had a bad connection...so who knows.

Now my only remaining piece to the puzzle is to replace the cracked front cover. I want to make sure this thing runs right though before I spend the cash on one and all the time changing it, but otherwise the swap is basically done!

MANY MANY thanks to everyone on this list for the helpful suggestions and advice. Of special note, Ben and Dave for answering many opf my inane questions in private and always giving me feedback..... You guys ROCK!
