It's on the firewall side of the block kind of in the center just above the oil pan. Quite a bitch to get to, especially on automatics.

do i get at it from the top or bottom of the car?

The only way to get to it from the top would be to take the heads off. In all honesty, I would jack up the passenger side, pull the tire, brake hardware (just hang the caliper from the spring to avoid having to bleed the brakes), and splash guards. Once you get that far, there are 3 or 4 bolts that hold your wheel bearings/hub to the steering knuckle. Remove those from behind the knuckle, and pop out your axle and hub as one piece. Take off the heat shield that goes around the inner CV, and you should hopefully have enough room to get in there with a small ratchet to remove it. If you have a 5 speed, just jack the front end up and go under it to find it on the back side of the engine.

A guy on the w-body forums said i will have to remove the alternator to get to the CPS.

          Is this true?

Yeah, I forgot about that puppy sitting there... Disconnect your battery before you pull the alternator so you don't burn your car down (alt + cable is NOT fuse protected).

              gave her another go today.

Broke 2 dam ratchets before giving up.

I Even broke a dam snap on believe it or not.

That's odd, I've never had to use anything other then my 2 foot pivot head 1/2" Craftsman ratchet. And mine would be weaker then a normal 1/2" because of the pivot head. I've never busted the pivot point though. Just the direction switch, the guts of the ratchet, or the actual 1/2" drive itself. If you still need a pic, let me know, I have an LQ1 on an engine stand right now. It was fun getting it there too, I don't have an engine hoist. I used 2 ratchet straps from my truck and my floor jack, lol.
