Is there anyway to tell the original model / year of car my 3.4 DOHC engine was in?

My 1992 z34 came with a motor that was obviously pulled (major marks on the engine lift bracket)

and it is very very clean, Apparently not from my high millage car.


So is there any serial numbers or codes that i can check to see the year the engine was made or the car it was originally from??

Well, if you have a 94/95 engine, on the front cam bank there will be a sensor sitting above the intake cam. The throttle body will be one piece with the upper intake manifold. In 96/97, it will have the same cam sensor, but the throttle body will be mounted to a long tube coming from the upper intake manifold. If you have a DOHC that does not have any of these features (excluding the 1 piece intake/TB) you have a 91-93. I don't know for sure of any numbers on them to tell, but those are the quick visual cues to tell with a quick glance.

maybe it was pulled, rebuilt and put back in. any good engine shop will clean/boil the parts when they do a rebuild.

Or one of the owners of the vehicle was very anal like many of us here and keeps it so clean you can eat off of it.
