  • What do your cars idle at in park and in gear?

Mine is exceptionally high.. of course, we've already determined that my car is f'd up in one way or another.

    In park it's around 1100

    In gear it's between 900 and 1000

I'm not sure if the 96 and 97 engines might idle higher b/c of the slight differences in design..

Like 700RPM in park and 500-600 in gear.

If you aren't reading the idle on a scan tool, its probably not accurate (of if you dont have a digital tach). Ive seen the scan tool say 800 and the tach be dead on 1000. Mine idles around 850 cause I set it there:P

I dunno my scan tool desired is darn close to the analog. Off by like 20-30rpm for my manual, auto different.

Says in desired 978 or so stopped in neutral, 1221 while moving higher than 10mph. On the auto it say 742 park 695-700 in gear Hmmm wierd.

Do you think I should slow my manual GP's idle down some???

That is right on for my Z. I have an auto.

I always thought that the 1221 while moving more than 10 was wierd. I guess not.

I dunno.... USUALLY mine hovers around 1200 untill I stop. Sometimes, it will drop down to a normal idle, as long as i'm not going so fast that the gear won't allow it (IE: 65mph in OD)

The 5-speed should be slightly above 1200 above 5mph and when slowing down less than that it should drop to around 800. That is what the dealer said. Mien does this exactly, but when it drops to 800, it normally will continue dropping to around 500, where it will either die or come back up.

And yes this is reading it with my factory tach, but the scan tool showed mine wasn't off too bad except at a really high rpm, it was like past 6300 mine read about 100 high.

I actually set mine a bit higher than when I got the GP, because it stalled once in awhile while hot.

The Manual engine idle was like that of a Auto 650 or so when I got it...All the Manuals I have drove idle at 1000 or about.

I had the computer checked for proper memcal, which it was, but desired was always higher than it was actually when I bought it. The engine also like to haze on throttle throat open from 0% to 15% or quick throttle plate movements, sometimes I could open and close it at a certain degree and get little engine response.

However I did dump about $1K or more on this car in maintainence and now it seems to run good, even more on the other stuff.

My car is way off from your friend's... I need to put a scan tool on it to see if the tach is correct. As it stands, I thought the 1996 and 97 engines just idled higher. Now I'm beginning to think that my car is needing some work.
