  • Head Gasket?

    i either have a bad head gasket or a cracked head my car is smoking white like a bitch and if u let it ldel for to long it dies and when u start it back up its nothing but white smoke but theres nothing in the oil, is there any short cuts to do the head gaskets the timing realllly freaks me out and always have i have cam hold down tools and thats it my engine is out of a 92 tho so its gonna be a pain with the lock rings is there any tools i need for them?
    1997 Chevrolet Camaro 30th Anniversary 5Speed.
    3800 V6 (i know its not a 60degree)
    stock for now

    i think its the front head i pulled all the plugs out and the first cyl to the left up front(#2 ?) has white shit all over it i was thinking about this, couldnt i just turn the engine intill the front cams were flat and hold them down and use the hold down tools in the rear put it on just enough so when i take the belt off the cams dont move and then do the front head gasket and put everything back otgather the way it came off marking emerying before hand? aslo i was reading an old thread from DOHCfriend you were saying all the lifters fell and u didnt know if u had to put them back in the same place, i bet mine are going to do the same thing what did u end up doing with them ?

    "ok, after trying an impact wrench on both bolts, there was no success. so i focused on the easy one first. got the drill started drilling and after a while then i stopped and then the top of the bolt shot off like a missle. but i had to take the factory hoist bracket off to get the cam bank off. after i got the cam bank off to my surprise the remnants of the bolt in the head was only finger tight!!! isn't that strange? i had to take a late lunch break i felt myself losing energy. i have 4 bolts left on the 1st head.


    here's a question. when i took the cam bank off, lifters went everywhere. because of mileage wear on them, i don't have to figure out which holes they came out of do i? cause that will never happen."

        aha!! i knew from that coolant thread you started it was a head gasket or warped/cracked head, should have put money on it.

        that is alot of reading and i am short on time. as of now remove both heads, take them to a machine shop and have them checked for cracks and to see if they are warped be4 re-installing the heads.

        i wish i would have known sooner about removing the front cam tower, it is beneficial to remove that steel bracket 1st.

        i'll get back to you.

        p.s. i have a near complete 94 lq1 in VGC with a recent rebuild on the heads. i'll let it go for $400. just a thought.

          where is it at and is the timing all ready set? how complete I put some head gasket sealer in this engine dont know how long it is gonna last but it seems like it did the trick .

          I used K&W Nanotechnology' green bottle.
