94+ the 3.4 engines got a much larger radiator, I assume that it would be the same for 91-93 cars. And why wouldn't you use the trans cooler?, the auxilary cooler that came stock on 3.4 cars still runs through the radiator.

mine didn't run threw the radiator it only went threw the cooler, and i have seen on other 3.4 luminas that it only goes threw the cooler. i put a aftermarket radiator in my car. and all he asked was auto or manual, when i pulled the old one out it was the same size as the new one. so i don't know about the different sizes

are u saying that some of the other ones are using an external cooler? do the other ones not have the places for your tranny lines to screw into(in the rad)? the factory one in mine, it is just a tranny cooler in the rad and it exchanges heat with the coolant?
could i possibly crack the rad open, get it out, and mount it somewhere where air can flow over it. or will it not function like that cause it was not designed to exchange with air?

if u carck it open u will be buying a new radiator, but u are saying your trans doesn't have a aux cooler in front of the rad

my current rad is busted anyway. guess it was a right of passage for the 1st engine pull.

but u are saying your trans doesn't have a aux cooler in front of the rad
mine does that is not what i meant. what i asked was in response to your 1st reply.

i was thinking why not? does it not have a tranny cooler or something.
because if the cooler is not present or different, i can extract it from my stock rad, and maybe use it that way but i don't know if it will function at all cause it exchanges heat with water and not air or are al tranny coolers created equal and i could use it that way if for some reason the lines will not hook up to a 3100 lumina rad.

i am hoping the radiators are the same for 3100 lumina's as the 3.4dohc lumina's because there a ton of them at the pick and pull. i know of a yard that has 3 z-34's in it but they will charge alot more than a pick and pull. that and it will be harder to pull the rad. cause this yard is old school(stacking them up 4 high).

sorry about the miscommunication i was tired.

It is fairly crucial to have the cooler lines going through the radiator, 180-240 is about the range that an auto tranny likes. Cooler or hotter then that the fluid doesn't do its job as well and the trans will have a much shorter life. The aux coolers are ment to suppliment the radiator cooler for those that put more heat into the tranny then the regular radiator can take out and keep it within range.

Whether your car came with it through just an aux cooler, it is supposed to be going through both. All GM diagrams even illustrate this.

The radiator in 3.1 Luminas were 5/8" thick and the Z was 1-3/8" thick ..
