  • Rounded off bolt in worst spot, ideas?

yes, those are the rear camshaft sprocket bolts. fronts came off perfect, those did not.

TRIED: heating/cooling, socket, wrench, vice grip, craftsman bolt-off

WILL ATTEMPT: carving the bolt head off with Dremel and then taking bolt out after pulley is off. do not have welder to weld on another bolt, so not an option.

    i need more inputs please!

thats sucks too bad u dont have a welder i ran into the same problem with the harmonic balancer bolt on a 3100 i just did i grinded the head of the bolt down and beat a big nut over it and welded the inside of the nut it came right off,

have u tryed using of them sockets that take striped bolts off ?

without a welder, and without taking the cam box off, your best bet is probably grinding the heads off, removing the sprockets, then removing the bolts. Had to do the same thing with one of mine. One thing I learned, always start with a six point socket. Those s.o.b.'s can be extremely tight!

one thing i learned a long time ago always use 6 point sockets unless you need to use 12 points.
all 12 points are good for is rounding shit off unless you need them for say example rod cap nuts.

yup, i got the craftsman bolt-outs and couldnt 'tap' the bit onto the bolt head because there really isnt enough space. so when i had the bit on as best as possible and tried, it just rounded out the head slightly more.

i said screw it and will give it all a whirl tomorrow. just sucks cuz first i had the idler pulley issue and now the camshaft sprocket bolt issues; the two events defining the tear down/assembly transition.

On my spare motor I broke 3 snap-on and one mac impact socket trying to get the crank bolt out. I finally got it after I hammered a 14mm onto it and used the impact again. Oh, and then I broke a pulley puller trying to get the crank pulley off. I ended up heating the shit out of it with a torch and yanking on it with a slide hammer.... FOR AN HOUR!!! Thank god that thing was on a stand and not in my car!!

we had to cut mine off w/ a cutting wheel and then use an air chisel to knock it off. cant remember exactly what we did.

^ what hell that mustve been. unfortunately, motor is in the car and i dont quite have the space to hammer anything on. i tried pressing on it with a breaker bar using lower frame as a support and that didnt work too well.

own it...doesnt work unless you can get it seated on the bolt better than i can at that position. cant hammer it, cant press it.

I wouldn't expect that to work anyway because of the torque you need to apply to the bolt. Probably just cut it up more with the craftsman set. You will probably have to pull the rear cam carrier off so that you can get to the bolts easier. I have had to do this for the same issue you are having, though I didn't round it off that much. Get a socket hammered on and then impact it.
