Inputs needed PLEASE!!!

ok, i have all the crap to do my timing belt as it is nearing the 60k mark so i will be hopefully fixing the issue at hand.

here are the symptoms:
-let car sit overnight, car starts up and idles fine
-no codes (had one for EVAP purge solenoid, but got a new one)
-car warms up and fun things begin to happen
-cruising above 60 or so and letting off the gas makes the car surge. the rpms flutter
-hit gas, goes away
-sit in rush hour for too long and the car will die, restart and proceed
-starting up car when engine is warm (or after dying), the engine RPMs jump to 3k for a few moments, drops down, goes up a bit, and finally levels out (if it doesn't die again)
-sometimes upon starting, there is what sounds like a good PUFF under the hood followed by the scent of burned oil? or something and the car will have a horrible idle
-check under hood, and the vacuum line from the EVAP purge solenoid to the throttle body is popped off at the throttle body. reinstall, restart and normal idle

for the life of me, i cant determine what most likely is the culprit to this wonderful mess.

my theories are: PCV, vacuum leak (not thinking intake gasket too much), fuel pressure regulator, and maybe (but doubtfully) fuel filter.

if anyone has had this scenario before, PLEASE TELL ME WHAT THE &$^% IT IS!!!!!

Mine was backfiring. Don't know if that is your puff sound. Mine was the vacuum line that goes from the front cam cover to the throttle arm. Fixed that and it went away.

My car would shut off when I was sitting in traffic too. Once it got warm the car would shut off, but then it would give me a hard time starting back up. Mine really wouldn't start back up unless it was cooled down.

That problem was the wire that goes from the CPS to the coils. The wire became exposed and touching each other causing it to short out. Don't know why it only did it though only when the car was running for a longer period of time and when it was warm.

I replaced that wire and I haven't had the problem since.

yeah, my car starts up after it kills in traffic, but could very well poop out again. but, fuel delivery will get checked first and then vacuum when i do the timing belt.

car smells like fuel sometimes through the vents after starting so im willing to bet its more on the fuel delivery side...but anything is possible at this time.

fuel pressure regulator. pulled the vacuum line off and saw myself some fuel spurt out....no good.
