  • timing belt ?

i have a 93 z-34 tore down to replace the timing belt. I've been using the two instructional sites on here to do it as i don't have a repair manual. my question is,,,I see the timing mark on the harmonic balancer but can't find any marks to line it up with to find tdc. the guy with the picture walk thru says the timing cover has a mark..i don't see anything on mine....anyone know?,,,thanks

    Number Five:

Permanent Marks Painted Dots, in this case timing groove on the dampener.

I am guessing, but sure I am close; that the dampener's mark should be at 3 O'clock.

I have a walk thru based on Jasonz34 printed out, I won't convert it back into digital if I don't get asked. Plus limitation on upload may make it hard to read, I can whip up a zip file, but I don't have time right now. I can work on it tonight.

      His walk-thru help me alot.

Makes you wonder why GM didn't put a timing grid edge instead of a casting imprint.

I say use the rod down the spark plug hole trick. I think it's more accurate. Well if you use a micrometer it is.

ok guys..thanks for the help,I believe i can get it in time now. heres a couple more questions...first,once u get the cam flats up and bolt the hold tool down,do i need a special tool to take the gears off?..(it's a 93 motor)..and please explain why the gears have to be romoved in the first place...and second,,,after i removed the plentam,,i noticed a hole just behind the themestat housing that has a rubber seal around it,,at fisrt i thought i had broken it off but it looks like it sits on there flush when ya bolt down the plentam...looks like it would leak..lol...as u can tell this is my first 3.4 experience.....thanks for all the help.

You can use the J38614 sprocket puller (or a steering wheel puller if you thread the holes on the sprockets).

The reason to release the sprockets is it's really the easiest way to keep the timing exact with the belt tensioner is in place.

After you have the new belt, idlers, actuator etc. in place, tighten the intake sprocket and release the flats tool on the rear bank, rotate the crank 1 rev to the next #1 TDC, the front cam sprockets will free wheel (keeping the flats up) while the rear bank has now rotated to flats down. Tighten the front sprockets and you've got it.

You will not be able to unlock the rear exhaust sprocket on a 93 so start the timing there.

                  Hope this helps.
