now that i have the timing cover off i am starting to grasp that photo walkthrough. i see both of the casting marks the walkthrough was referring to i haven't seen the notch on the balancer but i am sure i will after i start turning the engine.i also see the flats.

the way this thing is works is these cam gears can lock and unlock allowing the cams to stay still while the gears and the crank to turn?

when i am turning the engine, which way am i going to turn it, clockwise or counterclockwise?

i heard u don't have to remove the gears or whatever

i have a 94 motor how do i lock and unlock the gears?

lastly, where do those homemade cam tools go?

the hottest the engine got was right next to the red and the coldest it got was the middle of the temp guage. there was no actual smoke coming from the engine bay. just ALOT of white smoke from the pipes.

      outside temp was 65*

I've seen lots of these heads and blocks form mostly fucked engines. None of them were cracked. Since overheating is the definate cause of cracking cast anything. Plus it has to be either constant or repetitive. You can take a piece of cast iron and heat it red hot and dump it into ice cold water and it probably won't crack. But continuous detonation or lean conditions will crack a head in no time. Localized overheating is worse than overall overheating but it is another big cause. But I think it has to be very bad. Like steam pouring out for half an hour, buried temp needle kinda thing. Next and almost always certain cause, freezing. That will fuck a motor up everytime, and royally too. But to make a long story short, your heads/block are going to be fine.

have any of u guys had trouble with that 1 fucking bolt in the cam banks. it is the 1 that is in a little hole filled with oil and u have to use a 3/8 socket to get to it. it seems to be torqued down 50lbs more than the other 10mm bolts or something. i rounded off 1, broke a socket on the other, and partially rounded off the other. other than that my day sucked.

              ok through venting....but still pissed.

ok, after trying an impact wrench on both bolts, there was no success. so i focused on the easy one first. got the drill started drilling and after a while then i stopped and then the top of the bolt shot off like a missle. but i had to take the factory hoist bracket off to get the cam bank off. after i got the cam bank off to my surprise the remnants of the bolt in the head was only finger tight!!! isn't that strange? i had to take a late lunch break i felt myself losing energy. i have 4 bolts left on the 1st head.

here's a question. when i took the cam bank off, lifters went everywhere. because of mileage wear on them, i don't have to figure out which holes they came out of do i? cause that will never happen.
