  • Cam Flats Question

    I know this was answered in the other thread i started but I keep getting mixed posts and i just want to be sure I am doing this 100% correct.

    1995 Chevy Monte Carlo Z34 3.4L DOHC
    I have the motor disassembled... the mark on the cover behind the harmonic balancer is lined up with the mark on the on the crank case. According to the little information I have this would mean the engine is on Top Dead Center of the No. 1 Cylinder on its exhaust stroke. The balancer/smaller pulley above the crank pulley (harmonic balancer if you will) is also lined up with its respective notch in the case.

    Should the FRONT bank (the ones closest to the bumper) cam flats both be facing up or down???? Answering this question will help me decided what changes i need to make.

    1 and 4 piston are at TDC at the same time. If you make the rear bank flat up and the front bank flat down, your number 1 piston will be on its compression stroke and piston number 4 is exhaust stroke. Now rotate the crank 360 degrees. Once again 1 and 4 are at TDC, only now number 1 is exhaust stroke and 4 is compression.

    IT DOES NOT MATTER WHICH BANK IS UP AND WHICH BANK IS DOWN

      Wouldnt he want to rotate it 180*?? Rotating it 360* will bring it all back to the same loaction.

        If you want to overly complicate the procedure, sure. Make a new mark 180 degrees out and then make a cam flat tool that is setup for the cams to be 90 degrees off on top.

        If you read my post, I explain why its 360 degrees. I have never heard of a timing procedure that has you measure for bottom dead center.
