I've tried to reseach this in the free time and here's all I can come up with....
This code is kicked in when the Quad control module of the PCM detects a overvoltage condition for 20 seconds in 4 or 5 different and various sensor and/or switch circuits.
I cant remember all of them, but some of them were the charcoal canister valve, the EGR, the coolant temp sensor, and 1 or 2 others.
It's a soft code--it pops on only for a second or two and then goes away, usually, for the remainder of the drive.
I suspecting that one of these sensors is out of spec and needs replacement---maybe. To me, it sounds like one of the sensors or switches are not working for a brief time then kicks on.
The Z runs great. This code just started on day. Now I get it just now and then. The car has no problems to speak of, except for the headliner is starting to fall down It just pizzin me off
That's strange, GM used the OBDII Designations before OBDII was in effect.... I can't get the info for a 96 (earliest year i have info for), 'cause P1640 isn't a valid code for a 1996 model..
Only thing i know about that is it's a Quad Driver Module A Error...

I know it is wierd. GM did something like 1/2 OBD II in this Lumina I have. 1994 has OBDII, but not all the normal sensors.
I cant really find anything on this code. Even my friend (whos a driveability tech) has put this on the snap-on scanner, got the code and it says in the snap on book to consult the mfg for this code?!?!?!
I think it just means that its running too good hehehehehehehheh j/k
It just pizzes me off. About a year ago, I tore down the whole motor to fix the dist oil ring. I did the best job i could with everything. The car runs GREAT and is pulling 15-15.4 even with the auto. I even used a torque wrench
why do I have this code?!?!?!?!?!
I may just be a defective fault code that is not suposed to pop into resident memory trigger. This certain code shows to have a long history in searches.
If it is possible I would just mabey have the code render deleted from the binary set, but don't take my word for it. covering my (l)
A Quad driver code is definately something you do NOT want to have... it has to do with some of the transmission controls, the EGR valve, some other things on the engine... A friend had a wire messed up on his EGR and it caused all sorts of funky things with the trans and the way it ran, etc..
